French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne resigns

The French President's office said that the country's Prime Minister , Ms. Elisabeth Borne, announced her resignation after 20 months in power but will continue to be in charge of related work until a new Government is formed.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has resigned.

France 24 television quoted the French President's Office on January 8 (local time) as saying: "Ms. Elisabeth Borne today submitted her resignation to President Emmanuel Macron and Mr. Macron accepted it."

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced her resignation as President Emmanuel Macron prepares to unveil a long-awaited cabinet reshuffle aimed at giving his second term new impetus ahead of European Parliament elections and the Paris Olympics next summer.

President Macron thanked Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne for her service. "Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne carried out her duties in the good of France. She carried out reforms with courage and determination. I thank her from the bottom of my heart," said Mr. Macron.

President Macron sparked speculation of a government reshuffle in December 2023 by promising a new political initiative, after France was hit by political crises following controversial pension and immigration reforms in 2023.

Ms Borne will continue to perform her duties as French Prime Minister until her successor is appointed.

Ms. Borne was appointed in May 2022 after Mr. Macron was re-elected for a second term. She is the second female prime minister in French history.
