The White House announced on February 17 that billionaire Elon Musk is not an employee of the US Government Efficiency Board (DOGE) and has no decision-making authority.
According to documents submitted to the court by the White House, Mr. Elon Musk only acts as an advisor to US President Donald Trump and conveys the president's instructions, Reuters reported.
“Like any other senior White House adviser, Mr. Musk does not have the authority to make decisions on behalf of the government,” according to the filing submitted by Director of the Office of the US Government Joshua Fisher.
Billionaire Elon Musk
The White House says billionaire Elon Musk is not an employee and does not have a leadership role in the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The agency has made a series of moves to streamline the US government, with thousands of employees across multiple agencies forced to resign. However, Joshua Fisher's profile does not specify who is leading DOGE.
Judge Tanya Chutkan, who will preside over a February 18 hearing on the question of Mr. Musk’s authority, expressed concerns about DOGE’s unpredictable operating mechanism.
“DOGE appears to be operating out of order. This is essentially a private citizen, running a non-federal organization, with access to the federal government, being able to fire, hire, terminate contracts and programs without congressional oversight,” ABC News quoted Ms. Tanya Chutkan.
Will the Trump-Musk duo cancel NASA's giant moon rocket?
On February 13, a group of 14 US states sued President Donald Trump and Mr. Elon Musk, claiming that the billionaire is holding unchecked power by continuously cutting government staff. The White House said Mr. Musk was appointed as a “special government employee” who can give opinions but has no decision-making power.
