Tien Yen district's forestry land area is currently 43,000 hectares, of which cinnamon growing area is 1,000 hectares. This is a crop with economic value for forest-growing households in the area. In order to achieve the goal of sustainable forestry development associated with increasing income for people in rural areas, Tien Yen district has been implementing and mobilizing people to maintain and expand organic cinnamon growing areas in the direction of product linkage to create stable income.
Dai Duc is a mountainous commune of Tien Yen district with a total area of 46.29 km2 with 7 ethnic groups living, of which the San Chi ethnic group accounts for the largest with 83.3%. Compared to many other communes in the district, the production conditions of the people here are quite difficult due to the steep terrain. Therefore, in economic development, forestry is still the strength of Dai Duc commune. The forest area in the commune is 3,739.2 hectares, mainly pine, acacia and cinnamon. In particular, cinnamon trees have a planting cycle of 12 years or more before being harvested, compared to acacia planting, the time for cinnamon planting is 2 cycles, but in return, the value is high and does not make the forest land infertile, so in recent years, people in the commune have switched from planting acacia to planting cinnamon.
Mr. Hoang Viet Tung, Party Secretary, Chairman of Dai Duc Commune People's Committee, said: For Dai Duc Commune, in addition to focusing on growing pine trees for resin, cinnamon is also a crop that is strongly developed by local people. Local people have focused on expanding cinnamon growing areas, in the past 3 years there have been organic cinnamon growing areas linked with businesses to increase income value.
Dai Duc's cinnamon growing area is currently 600 hectares, of which nearly 150 hectares are organically grown and 10 hectares have been granted a growing area code. Dai Duc commune also plans to plant an additional 50 hectares of cinnamon each year in the coming time, thereby contributing to increasing income for local people.
Mr. San A Phat (Khe Lac village, Dai Duc commune) shared: My family has grown cinnamon for many years, but in the last 4 years, we have grown and cared for it organically. Growing cinnamon is relatively simple, does not require much care and gives a good income. In particular, from 2022 up to now, the district has cooperated with Son Ha Huong Vi Company to consume output products for the people, so we are very secure in not having to find a market for consumption, and our income is also higher.
The cinnamon area of Tien Yen district is currently 1,000 hectares, concentrated in the communes of Dai Duc, Yen Than, Phong Du, Dong Ngu, Hai Lang. Since 2022, Tien Yen district has implemented a cooperation program with Son Ha Huong Vi Company to provide cinnamon materials for export to the European market. From this program, the Company also cooperated with 41 households in Dai Duc commune to plant 150 hectares of organic cinnamon and has its quality assessed annually by the authorities.
Ms. Do Thi Duyen, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Yen district, said: In 2023, the cinnamon output harvested in the district reached 400 tons. However, this year, due to the impact of storm No. 3, nearly 400 hectares of cinnamon in Tien Yen district were damaged, so the cinnamon output is expected to decrease significantly. Currently, taking advantage of the sunny weather, cinnamon growers in the area are also actively cleaning up to recover the fallen cinnamon area, at the same time immediately starting the cinnamon harvest at the end of the year and preparing to soon deploy forest planting in the spring of 2025.
Implementing the Project on sustainable forest development in Tien Yen district until 2025, with a vision to 2030, the district focuses on promoting the afforestation economy, in which cinnamon is the main crop in forestry in the district. In the coming time, Tien Yen district will also continue to propagate and mobilize people to expand the area of organic cinnamon cultivation in association with Son Ha Huong Vi Company. Thereby, contributing to increasing cinnamon output as well as enhancing production value for forest growers in the district.
