This week, oil prices continued to climb, with Brent crude increasing by $2.34 to $76.51 per barrel and WTI crude increasing by $3.36 to $73.96 per barrel.
The week between the old year and the new year 2024-2025 witnessed a dramatic "sprint" of oil prices. The last two trading sessions of 2024 witnessed a significant acceleration. Specifically, on December 30, 2024, oil prices edged up slightly as investors expected lower temperatures in the US and Europe to boost diesel demand. Then, on the last session of the year, oil prices increased by about 1% after US airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, raising concerns about geopolitical instability.
Despite a late-year pickup, oil prices ended 2024 with a second consecutive year of declines, with Brent down about 3% while WTI was flat.
Entering 2025, oil prices had a "standstill" session on January 1 due to the market closure. However, the increase continued strongly in the first trading session of the new year (January 2). Oil prices jumped more than 1 USD, supported by optimistic factors about the Chinese economy after President Xi Jinping's commitment to boost growth, along with data on US crude oil inventories falling by 1.2 million barrels. However, the increase was somewhat limited by information about the US gasoline and distillate inventories soaring.
Brent crude ended the week up a total of $2.34 to $76.51 a barrel, while WTI crude rose $3.36 to $73.96 a barrel. This marked the first consecutive week of gains in 2025, extending the rally to a second consecutive week.
