US President Joe Biden signed a law in April requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok in the US by January 19, 2025. ByteDance said the divestment request was not technically, commercially, or legally feasible; adding that the US government had refused to participate in any settlement negotiations after 2022.
Lawyers for a group of TikTok users filed a lawsuit on June 20 against the ban, arguing that the ban violates US free speech rights and that TikTok does not pose an immediate national security risk as the government is allowing it to operate during the presidential election. The White House said it wants to end Chinese ownership on national security grounds, but does not want to ban TikTok.
