TikTok escapes US ban threat after last-minute deal

The structure of the deal is similar to an option discussed earlier this year, Reuters reported.

According to analysts, this agreement will end a legal and trade "war" that has lasted nearly a year, which has caused many concerns about national security.

TikTok's US assets will be transferred from its parent company ByteDance (China) to new owners in the US.

For the app, which has 170 million users in the United States, it is a significant step forward in months of tense negotiations between the world's two largest economies , as they seek to cool a trade war that has roiled global markets.

"We have a deal on TikTok... There are a group of very large companies that want to buy it," President Trump said at a White House press conference, without providing further details.

The announcement comes just a day before the September 17 deadline, when TikTok faces the choice of being forced to divest or shut down.

Shortly thereafter, the White House extended the deadline to December 16, giving ByteDance another 90 days to complete the complicated procedures of the deal.

The role of American investors

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) said that TikTok's new legal entity in the US will have a board of directors with a majority of Americans, including one member appointed by the US government.

Core details of the new deal, similar to the one in April, include ByteDance retaining less than 20% of the shares, making it the largest single shareholder.

According to WSJ, the consortium of investors holding the remaining 80% will include current ByteDance shareholders such as Susquehanna International Group (SIG), General Atlantic, KKR, along with new investors such as Andreessen Horowitz. Oracle and Silver Lake are said to be participating in this deal.

While the general terms are not expected to change, sources said the final structure could have last-minute adjustments.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that trade terms were essentially agreed upon at the beginning of the year.

"This deal would not have been possible without appropriate safeguards for US national security. It appears we have also met the interests of the Chinese side," he said.
