Good news for users waiting for foldable iPhone

(Dan Tri) - According to DigiTimes, the development process of the foldable iPhone (iPhone Fold) entered the first prototype manufacturing stage (Prototype 1) last month.

This is the first stage where the company creates a fully functional device. If all goes according to plan, Apple could complete prototype testing by the end of 2025. After that, the product will move on to the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) stage.

According to 9to5mac , the current stage is still very early. After testing with the first prototype, Apple will create two more prototypes before moving to the EVT stage. This is to determine the final design that can be put into production.

Each prototyping phase takes about two months, during which time Apple’s supply chain partners conduct testing before handing over assembly to companies like Foxconn and Pegatron, who confirm the product’s manufacturing capabilities and assembly capacity.

Apple has halted plans to develop a foldable iPad, a supply chain source has revealed. The company was originally planning to launch the foldable iPad alongside the iPhone Fold.

However, Apple has encountered many difficulties in the production process. Folding screen technology has increased production costs. Meanwhile, Apple assesses that user demand for folding screen devices is not too large at present.

Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected to be announced in the fall of 2026, around the same time as the iPhone 18 lineup.

Previously, the Weibo social network account of leaker Digital Chat Station said that the foldable iPhone will be equipped with a dual camera cluster with a resolution of 48MP.

Although detailed specifications have not been revealed, experts say the second lens will likely be an ultra-wide-angle lens, instead of a telephoto lens, due to space constraints inside the foldable device.

Regarding the selfie camera, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that the foldable iPhone will integrate an under-screen camera for the inner screen, while the outer screen (when folded) will use a traditional hole-punch design.

Previous leaks suggest the foldable iPhone will have a 5.5-inch display when folded and a 7.8-inch display when unfolded, with a horizontal folding design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold.

The device is expected to be about 4.5mm thin when opened and 9.5mm when folded. Apple is also said to be focusing on improving the hinge to completely eliminate the crease on the screen.

Due to space constraints, the Face ID facial recognition system may not appear on this foldable iPhone model. Instead, Apple will likely re-integrate the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
