(CLO) President Joe Biden praised the cooperation between South Korea, Japan and the US on the sidelines of the APEC 2024 Summit Week taking place in Peru.

Speaking at a meeting on the sidelines of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum on November 15, Mr. Biden praised the partnership between Japan and South Korea, two countries that are currently tightening security and economic ties.

Mr Biden noted that this was his last meeting with them but the trilateral partnership should be maintained for many years to come. "I'm proud of how far we've come. Whatever the problem, we've solved it together," the US President said.

"The challenging security environment in and outside the region once again reminds us of the importance of trilateral cooperation," South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba also stressed the importance of cooperation between the three countries, pointing to recent military exercises between the three countries as a sign of cooperation. He expressed his desire to promote trilateral partnership in various fields.

Biden is on a six-day trip to Latin America for the last major international gatherings of his presidency, following APEC with a summit of leaders from the Group of 20 (G20) leading economies in Brazil. He is likely to face questions from world leaders about the incoming administration when Donald Trump returns to the White House.

Mr. Biden has pushed Japan and South Korea to put aside years of historical hostility and strengthen economic and security ties. The three countries have signed a pledge to consult, share information and send a unified message when faced with a threat or crisis.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the Biden administration is working to ensure trilateral cooperation is a "permanent feature of US policy." He hopes it will continue under President Trump.

Both Mr. Yoon and Mr. Ishiba have been in contact with President-elect Trump and are aiming to maintain their countries' relations with the new administration amid rising tensions.
