On July 4, Tran Quang Dat in Ha Tinh province and Pham Thanh Toan (41 years old) in Kien Giang province were detained by Hoai Nhon town police (Binh Dinh) for fraud and property appropriation.

The investigation agency is coordinating with police in many provinces and cities to expand the case and arrest related suspects.

According to the investigation, Dat, Toan and many accomplices recently purchased real jewelry and brought it back to make models out of silver and gold. They then sold the fake jewelry or pawned it to shops.

In November 2022, Dat went to a gold shop in Hoai Nhon town to buy a 1.5-tael gold necklace and a 2-tael bracelet, along with a receipt worth nearly 190 million VND, and then brought them back to his rented room in Dong Nai province. There, Dat and Toan used silver to make fake necklaces and bracelets according to the real model and then plated them with gold. The two subjects sold the real jewelry to a gold and silver shop in Dong Nai province to spend the money.

Police seized the evidence.

Next, Dat and Toan took the old receipt, along with the fake necklace and bracelet, and returned to the gold shop in Hoai Nhon to pawn it. The shop owner looked at the receipt and the jewelry, thinking it was theirs, so he agreed to pawn it for 170 million VND.

At this time, in the provinces of Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Gia Lai , Kien Giang... many gold shop owners also fell into similar traps.

After a period of surveillance, on June 28, Hoai Nhon Town Police coordinated with functional forces to inspect Dat and Toan's boarding house in Long Duc Commune, Long Thanh District, Dong Nai Province. Police arrested the two suspects, confiscated many gold and silver jewelry and tools and machines used to make fake gold.

Initially, Dat and Toan admitted to making fake gold to defraud shop owners in Hoai Nhon and several jewelry stores in other provinces.

Investigators assessed that this group operated in a sophisticated manner, using cars with fake license plates to travel from the southern provinces to the central region to commit fraud. They also supplied fake gold to other fraud groups.
