Workers working on the construction site

Between the blazing sun and the jungle rain

The La Son - Hoa Lien highway expansion project stretches across many complex terrains. Under the scorching sun of the Central region, the road surface is hot and sneezing, workers and engineers are still working hard to tie steel bars and pour concrete. Wet towels are wrapped around their necks, sweat is rolling down their cheeks, but their hands are still working tirelessly.

Suddenly, a downpour came. Many areas of red soil were covered with thick layers of mud, making it difficult to move. However, no one gave up their work. Nguyen Minh Tam, a construction worker at Tay Hy Bridge, smiled gently: "On sunny days it's like roasting, on rainy days it's muddy, but having chosen the road and bridge profession, everyone is prepared for the hardship. We just hope the bridges will be completed soon so that people can travel more safely and conveniently."

Currently, along the route, there are 7 main construction teams and 41 bridge construction teams simultaneously deployed. The team digs and fills the roadbed, the team operates bored piles, the team rushes to pour concrete, and set up scaffolding. Each person has a job, all working towards the same goal: To complete the schedule on time, but must ensure safety in work.

At Tay Hy bridge, we also recorded the urgent and busy construction atmosphere. The project has completed 57/64 bored piles, erected 6/10 bridge piers and is digging foundation pits for the remaining 4 piers. At the two bridge abutments, M2 piles have been drilled, M1 piles are under construction.

Mr. Hoang Trong Quang, representative of the Tay Hy Bridge construction supervision consultant, pointed to the bridge piers that were gradually taking shape and shared: “The most difficult part is still the bridge construction. The entire route has 50 large and small bridges, including bridges longer than 500m, with piers over 40m high. The rainy season in Bach Ma Pass often comes suddenly, flash floods can happen at any time. Therefore, we have to take advantage of every sunny hour to work.”

Strive to reach the finish line on time

The La Son - Hoa Lien expansion project started on May 29, 2025, with the goal of completion within 240 days. To date, the construction value has reached nearly 11% of the total investment of more than VND 2,500 billion.

There are currently more than 600 engineers, workers and more than 200 machines and equipment divided into 54 construction teams, operating continuously. 6 field testing stations and two connecting stations have been set up to strictly control the quality of the project. There are nights when the high-pressure lamps light up the entire area, and the team of workers and engineers are still working hard.

A representative of 484 Joint Stock Company said: “Right after the groundbreaking ceremony, we mobilized all human resources and equipment. During the day, it was sunny, and at night, the lights were as bright as day. Everyone tried their best to keep up with the schedule.”

Towering bridge piers amidst the mountains and forests have gradually taken shape, demonstrating the human hand and will. Many complex projects such as bored piles at Ta Lang - Gian Bi bridge, Km41+950 bridge, Km60+986 bridge... have been completed at 100% of the plan.

Mr. Trinh Minh Yen, a construction worker on the project, confided: “Standing at the foot of the bridge and looking up at the 40-meter-high pillar, sometimes I feel small. But that is also the motivation for us to work more seriously. Just a small mistake can affect the whole project, so we have to be absolutely careful.”

According to Mr. Nguyen Vu Quy, Director of the Ho Chi Minh Road Project Management Board: Currently, the entire land has been cleared for a scale of 4 lanes, only a few residential roads and canals need to be additionally processed. This is a great advantage for contractors to focus all their efforts on construction.

Mr. Nguyen Vu Quy also affirmed: “The contractors are speeding up the progress. The unit will continue to direct and closely monitor the progress and quality, ensure safety during the rainy and stormy season, and strive to bring the project to the finish line on schedule in early 2026.”

The La Son - Hoa Lien Expressway expansion project, when completed, will not only solve the problem of ensuring traffic safety and reducing the load on National Highway 1A, but also contribute to inter-regional connectivity and create momentum to promote socio -economic development in the Central region.

The North-South Expressway expansion project in the eastern section of La Son - Hoa Lien (connecting Hue with Da Nang ) has a total length of 65km, with a total investment of more than 3,000 billion VND. The entire route is expanded to 4 lanes, with a roadbed width of 22m. The project utilizes the existing 12 bridges that have met the 4-lane standard, while simultaneously building new bridge units and expanding the remaining 50 bridges, ensuring a scale of 4 lanes. The project is built according to expressway standards, with a design speed of 60 - 80km/h.
