Deploying new school year tasks: Love fulcrum

A small house in the middle of the forest is a sharing and motivation for teachers to stick with their work long-term in difficult areas.

Feelings behind the podium

Huong Trach Primary School - one of the schools located in the mountainous commune of Phuc Trach still has many difficulties. The remote terrain, sparse population, and poor living conditions make teaching here not easy. In particular, most of the school's teachers do not live locally, have to travel from other places, or rent houses to teach. The whole school has 17 teachers from far away, of which 8 need to stay - most of them are from Quang Tri ; the farthest one lives more than 70km from the school.

For many years now, the image of young teachers having to stay in temporary houses with corrugated iron roofs and thin walls, hot in the summer and leaky in the rainy season has become all too familiar. This not only makes the lives of teachers difficult, but also directly affects their health, spirit and teaching quality. Although the education sector has made reasonable arrangements and rotations of teachers to support them, the problem of "settling down" is still a big concern that cannot be completely resolved.

Ms. Tran Thi Hong Na (born in 1993), from Minh Hoa commune, Quang Tri province, is one of the young teachers who has been involved in education in the mountainous region of Huong Khe for 4 years. In the first years of her career, she was assigned to work at Huong Binh Primary School (Huong Binh commune, Ha Tinh ), nearly 100km from her home. Despite the distance, she still regularly traveled the long distance every week to teach.

In the 2024-2025 school year, she was transferred to Huong Trach Primary School, an area bordering Quang Tri; the distance was shorter, but it was still impossible to commute every day. To maintain her work, she and some colleagues rented houses to live in, although the living conditions were still very makeshift.

“The biggest shortage is private space and living conditions for women, especially when they have small children. Building public housing is something we have long wanted. I have registered for a room so I can bring my child to live with me, both for convenience in taking care of him and for peace of mind at work,” Ms. Na shared.

Also in that joy, Ms. Dinh Thi Thu Quynh - a teacher at the same school, from Tan Thanh commune (Quang Tri), could not hide her emotions. In the near future, she plans to take maternity leave and wants to move her child and relatives to live nearby for convenient care. "The dream of a stable and safe place to live is about to come true. With a place to live, we can wholeheartedly teach and have a long-term relationship with students in difficult areas," Ms. Quynh expressed.

The silent sacrifices of teachers here are not easy to measure. Not only are they hard because of the distance, the poor living conditions also directly affect their psychology, health and career motivation. Therefore, building public housing not only solves material problems, but also plays an important role in creating peace of mind and keeping teachers in difficult lands.

Mr. Duong Ba Phuong - Principal of Huong Trach Primary School, said: Phuc Trach is one of the areas with many difficulties, the roads are difficult. For many years, the school has been facilitated by rotating teachers appropriately to ensure the teaching staff.

However, there are still many teachers who have to teach far from their residence, so building a boarding house is an urgent need. This is not simply a construction project, but also a symbol of sharing, companionship and respect. It is a practical new school year gift for teachers to feel secure working in remote areas.

Residence for teachers

From the reality in Huong Trach, the need for public housing is not only a personal desire of teachers, but also a systemic problem that needs to be solved by synchronous policies. Therefore, in recent years, the Ha Tinh Education sector has proactively proposed and closely coordinated with relevant departments, branches and local authorities to gradually invest and complete the public housing system throughout the province.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Cuong - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh, in preparation for the 2025 - 2026 school year, since the end of 2024, the Department of Education and Training has coordinated with the People's Committees of districts, towns, cities (now wards and communes) and the Department of Finance to advise the Provincial People's Committee to arrange funds for investment in construction, upgrading, renovation and repair of school facilities.

In particular, building new or upgrading official houses for teachers is one of the important contents, given top priority, to help teachers feel secure in working long-term in remote areas. In addition, the industry also mobilizes social resources to equip official houses at disadvantaged schools with beds, cabinets, and basic living equipment.

"Thanks to the attention of provincial leaders, the drastic participation of departments, branches and local authorities, the public housing system in the province has basically met the accommodation needs of teachers," informed Mr. Nguyen Hong Cuong.

In Phuc Trach, the project of public housing for teachers of schools in the commune was implemented thanks to the support of enterprises with a total cost of about 3.3 billion VND. The project includes building a new row of level 4 houses with 8 rooms (area of 340m²) and renovating and upgrading the old row of level 4 houses (also including 8 rooms). The project is expected to be completed and put into use in the 2025 - 2026 school year.

According to Mr. Phan Quoc Thanh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuc Trach Commune, the whole commune currently has 103 cadres, teachers and staff working at kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools; of which 8 people need boarding accommodation, 24 people need semi-boarding accommodation. Investing in building public housing not only solves material problems, but is also a deeply humane policy, demonstrating the responsibility and concern of the government for those who are sticking to school and class every day in the middle of difficult areas.

It is not difficult to feel the joy spreading in the eyes and words of teachers at the opportunity to live in a more decent, safe and comfortable living space. When the last bricks are completed, it is also the time when a new chapter in the life of teachers at Phuc Trach begins. Each room of the official residence is not only a place to live, but also a spiritual support, a sharing of the whole industry and society with teachers in difficult areas.

Currently, Ha Tinh province has 15 teacher housing blocks with a total of 161 rooms, meeting nearly 100% of the boarding needs of teachers in schools in remote areas. In 2025, the Education sector will continue to renovate and repair 2 more blocks of staff housing with a total of 32 rooms, with an investment cost of about 3 billion VND, demonstrating a strong commitment to taking care of the lives of the teaching staff.
