Economic development prospects from tea tree

Once a plant that grew naturally in the forest, the tea tree has now been brought back to the people of Nam Pung commune (Bat Xat) to grow in their gardens, initially bringing in a stable income. Thanks to support in seeds, techniques and product consumption from businesses, the tea tree is opening up a new direction for economic development for this highland commune.

In Kin Chu Phin 2 village, Mr. San Giao Su's family is one of the pioneers in bringing tea trees to grow in their home garden, with more than 1.5 hectares. After 2 years of taking root, the tea trees adapted to the climate and soil, grew well, and some areas were harvested, bringing in a stable income.

Also in Kin Chu Phin 2 village, Ms. Cao Lo May has invested in planting more than 1 hectare of tea. According to Ms. May, the tea plants are growing well and she hopes that the next harvest will bring a good income for her family.

Previously, tea vine grew naturally in the forest, and people could earn a few hundred thousand dong a day just by picking and selling it. However, the natural tea source is increasingly depleted. In order to both preserve this precious medicinal plant and bring stable income to the people, the Nam Pung commune government has coordinated with businesses to provide quality seeds, support planting techniques and commit to consuming the products.

After two years of implementation, the commune has over 20 hectares of tea, with more than 70 households participating in planting. Tea is easy to grow, has few pests and diseases, is not damaged by livestock, and can be grown in many terrain conditions such as stone fences, roadsides or sloping land.
