Rafael Nadal is making a strong comeback after nearly a year out of action. The Spaniard was too strong for the young Australian in the round of 16 of the Brisbane International.
Nadal beat Dominic Thiem in the first match and continued his impressive form against Kubler. Dropping only 2 points in the first 3 service games, plus 2 breaks, Nadal easily took a 5-0 lead in the first set.
Seemingly to further confirm his impressive comeback, Nadal let his opponent lead 40-0 in game 7, then he continuously saved break-points, successfully defended his serve game and sealed a 6-1 victory.
In the second set, Kubler had absolutely no chance of defeating Nadal. The Spanish player broke in the first game (1-0) and accelerated to victory with a break in the 7th game (5-2). As a result, Nadal won 6-2 and ended the match after 1 hour and 23 minutes.
In the quarterfinals, Nadal will face Jordan Thompson, the host country's player who did not have to compete in the round of 16 because his opponent Ugo Humbert withdrew.
