China successfully manufactures 'moon bricks': Breakthrough to build bases outside Earth

DNVN - Chinese scientists have made a major breakthrough in realizing the dream of building a base on the Moon. They have created “moon bricks” from a material with the same composition as the soil on Earth’s natural satellite.

A research team from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) has exploited lunar soil simulation material brought back by the Chang'e 5 spacecraft to create bricks that are three times stronger than conventional red bricks and concrete bricks.

In parallel, scientists have developed a new construction method through additive manufacturing technology, also known as 3D printing technology, which allows the creation of objects in three-dimensional space with computer control. They have also invented 3D printing robots, capable of building complex structures directly from lunar soil.

To ensure the quality and durability of this new material, the researchers said the bricks need to undergo many performance tests in conditions simulating the harsh lunar environment, including extremely high and low temperatures, cosmic radiation and moonquakes.

According to China Central Television, the “moon bricks” will be transported to China’s space station by the Shenzhou 8 cargo spacecraft to evaluate their mechanical performance and heat resistance, as well as their ability to withstand cosmic radiation. The first “moon brick” is expected to be returned to Earth by the end of 2025. Chinese scientists hope that this invention will open up the possibility of building a lunar base in the near future.

On October 15, China announced a mid- and long-term national development program for space science, outlining a roadmap for the development of the field until 2050. The China-initiated international lunar research station is expected to be built in the second phase of the program from 2028 to 2035.
