China shows off AI capabilities under pressure from the US

More than 500 companies attended the conference, most of them Chinese. Among the foreign companies present at the event were two big American names: Tesla and Qualcomm.

In addition to introducing many products and systems related to artificial intelligence, Chinese technology companies have also expressed strong support for this field, despite US sanctions.

The conference also served as a launch pad for several companies to showcase their latest AI products. SenseTime unveiled SenseNova 5.5, its most advanced large language model (LLM). SenseNova 5.5 is seen as a rival to GPT-4o, a tool from US rival OpenAI, in areas such as mathematical reasoning.

Despite many challenges, such as limited access to advanced chips due to US sanctions, many Chinese business leaders believe that domestic companies will continue to thrive in the field of AI. At the event, several Chinese companies (Iluvatar Corex, Moore Threads, Sophgo, Enflame Technology...) introduced AI chips designed to fill the gap left by Nvidia (US) in the domestic market.

In addition, some executives called for the AI industry to shift its focus away from developing LLM, which requires a lot of computing power and AI chips. Instead, they said the industry should prioritize AI applications, according to Reuters. "Without applications, just having the underlying models, whether open source or closed source, is worthless," Robin Li, CEO of Baidu, emphasized at the conference.
