From soft skills to e-commerce: The new journey of women in the highlands of Quang Ngai

According to experts, on the journey to approach e-commerce and expand the output of typical products of ethnic minority areas, in addition to state support and policies, it is necessary to focus on training skills so that each person can become a "digital seller".

Displaying red-fleshed Ruby guavas on the table, Ms. Dinh Thi Ha, a Ca Dong ethnic group member of the Son Long Production, Cultivation and Livestock Cooperative (Son Tay commune, Quang Ngai province), placed her phone to prepare for a livestream sales session on social networks. She confided that in the past, she felt shy about speaking in front of hundreds of people watching on the screen. In each online sales session like this, local Association officials stood next to her to remind her and encourage members to persevere in getting used to it. Thanks to that, the members of the group have increasingly improved their skills and become proficient in applying digital technology to the production and consumption of agricultural products. Products such as red-fleshed Ruby guava, grapefruit, banana, honey, medicinal herbs, etc. of women in Son Tay commune have become known to many consumers, and online orders are increasing.

Having participated in grassroots association activities for many years, Ms. Pham Thi Trinh Nu, President of the Women's Union of Son Tay Ha commune, understands well the economic development activities of local women. Previously, agricultural products and fruits of Ca Dong families were only sold directly to people in the surrounding area, so income was unstable and the value was not high. Thanks to the attention of authorities at all levels, especially the Women's Union of Quang Ngai province and programs and projects to support economic development, support women in starting businesses, digital transformation, etc., Ca Dong women have the opportunity to participate in training, receive technical support, loans and participate in training courses on digital transformation and online business.

Ms. Trinh Nu herself is also well aware of the importance of applying technology, promoting e-commerce, and expanding the output of local specialties. With just a smartphone, many members and women have confidently started a business from homegrown agricultural products. The President of the Women's Union of Son Tay Ha commune is nurturing and developing a plan to closely coordinate with the Women's Union at higher levels to continue organizing in-depth training courses on brand building, e-commerce, and digital transformation in agriculture, contributing to enhancing the economic power of Ca Dong women, as well as women in Quang Ngai.

Online sales skills training

With the goal of promoting products, over the years, the Department of Industry and Trade of Quang Ngai province has supported many enterprises, cooperatives, production establishments, and business households to bring their products to the province's two e-commerce trading floors:

www.quangngaitrade.vn and https://ocopquangngai.vn. At the same time, support businesses to participate in reputable domestic and foreign e-commerce trading floors such as Shopee, Lazada...; support units to build online brands, e-commerce websites, register e-commerce websites...

According to Dr. Pham Hoai Nam (Quang Ngai Economic Science Association), agriculture is one of the eight sectors prioritized for digital transformation in the National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030. "To promote the development of e-commerce of agricultural products, in addition to state support and policies, it is necessary to focus on training skills for each citizen to become a digital seller, a digital enterprise, and change traditional business habits. At the same time, be proactive in consuming agricultural products through e-commerce platforms and digital platforms, which was not possible before," said Dr. Pham Hoai Nam.
