On the afternoon of September 2, 1945, the Vietnamese people's aspiration for independence and freedom was raised by President Ho Chi Minh at Ba Dinh Square ( Hanoi ). The last sentence of the historic Declaration of Independence affirmed: "The entire Vietnamese people are determined to devote all their spirit and strength, their lives and property to maintain their freedom and independence."
The spirit of independence and freedom endures forever
Until August 1945, the first and foremost goal of the Vietnamese people's struggle was to regain national independence and escape the oppression of colonialism. Breaking with the past of slavery, President Ho Chi Minh affirmed the people's determination to build a new social regime: "Our people have broken the colonial chains of nearly 100 years to create an independent Vietnam. Our people also overthrew the monarchy of several decades to establish the Democratic Republic" 1 . The revolutionary government belonged to the people, immediately setting and solving the very heavy task of developing the economy and culture, improving the material and spiritual life of the people, and promoting the development of society. The victory of the August Revolution strongly affirmed national and democratic values and "Vietnam has the right to enjoy freedom and independence, and in fact has become a free and independent country. The entire Vietnamese people are determined to devote all their spirit and strength, their lives and property to maintain that freedom and independence" 2 .
The truth " Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom" that President Ho Chi Minh proposed has inspired the Vietnamese people with a burning desire ( In photo : General rehearsal of event A80)

More than a year later, with that will, the entire Vietnamese people rose up to wage a national resistance war, "Rather sacrifice everything than lose the country, than become slaves", defending their sacred national independence with the strength of their tradition of unyielding resistance against foreign invaders, with the strength of great solidarity, with a firm belief in final victory. That will was developed and summarized by President Ho Chi Minh into the truth: Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom when American bombs fell on both the North and the South. That truth accompanied the Vietnamese people through the fierce years of resistance wars against invaders, creating glorious feats and glorious victories of the Vietnamese people in the 20th century. The long and heroic resistance ended in the inevitable trend of history - the trend of unification and peace.
The desire for power always burns strongly
A historian once said (roughly): Passing on a memory and reviving an identity is not only leaving a legacy but also outlining a way of life . Reviving a glorious history will also/will awaken the consciousness of the past for the next generation, transforming it into/into what exists in the present, laying the foundation for future development. The August Revolution is a major event in the history of the nation and is an event worthy of passing on the reason for living to the next generation in the true sense. The victory of the August Revolution opened a new revival for the Vietnamese people. The independence of the "new Vietnam" that began to be built from Independence Day is complete independence, true independence - in which national independence is closely linked to the freedom and happiness of the people.
The victory of this revolution also opened up a bright future, created confidence and hope, encouraged and empowered the nation's spirit to rise up. Although there was a period of interruption due to the war, the construction and change in Vietnam officially began after Independence Day, September 2, 1945. After completing the steadfast and heroic struggle to gain and maintain national independence for 30 years in the middle of the 20th century, the Vietnamese people continued to build the country to develop and advance to prosperity.
The Doi Moi process initiated and led by the Party since the last decades of the 20th century is also an affirmation of the profound lessons and historical values of the August Revolution. Independence and national autonomy are the basic foundation and prerequisite to awaken and develop geopolitical and geo-economic potentials, promote and develop the values of Vietnam's cultural heritage, landscapes and natural resources, the cultural identity and people of Vietnam, striving for a prosperous Vietnam, "rich people, strong country, democracy, fairness, civilization".
The great achievements of the Renovation and Development Era that began in 1986 have created a miracle of a country successfully rising from crisis. From a poor, backward, war-ravaged, low-level-of-development, besieged and embargoed country, Vietnam has become a developing country with an average income, deeply and widely integrated into world politics, the global economy, and human civilization, taking on many important international responsibilities, and promoting an active role in many important multilateral organizations and forums. Independence , sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity have been maintained; national and ethnic interests have been guaranteed. The achievements of the 40-year renovation process have historical significance, bringing about great and positive changes for the country.
"Fire" from Independence Day passed down today
Today, Vietnam has accumulated enough power and strength for a breakthrough development in the future. Following the Era of Independence, Freedom and the Era of Renovation will be the Era of the Vietnamese nation's rise, which carries the connotation of an era of development, an era of wealth, an era of prosperity, a rich people, a strong country, democracy, equality and civilization.
Today, we continue to affirm and promote the spirit of independence and freedom that was raised in the Declaration of Independence . National independence in the new context also includes the requirement to ensure equality and self-determination in international relations, to ensure territorial integrity and national sovereignty; to protect and maintain friendly relations and cooperation for mutual development on the basis of respect for mutual interests among nations, contributing to building peace, friendship, and cooperation for mutual prosperity and progress.
Today, the conditions for the nation to enter the Era of national rise are much stronger and broader than 80 years ago. The Era of national rise converges the nation's endogenous strength combined with external forces brought about by opportunities with the spirit of effort and confidence to successfully achieve strategic goals, realize the aspiration of "Building a peaceful, unified, independent, democratic and prosperous Vietnam, and contributing worthily to the world revolutionary cause" 3 as the last wish of President Ho Chi Minh.
Today, the entire nation is united, joins hands, seizes opportunities, takes advantage of favorable conditions, overcomes challenges, creates breakthroughs to develop the country comprehensively and strongly, achieves strategic goals with the 100th anniversary of the Party's founding, creating a solid foundation to rise up to achieve historical achievements marking a century of founding a new Vietnam .
