Specialist Doctor I Nguyen Thi Thanh - Head of the Examination Department of Hanoi Eye Hospital said that the hospital had just received a 17-year-old male patient who came for examination with blurred vision and reduced vision.
Through medical history, the patient felt a foreign body and itchy eyes so he went to the hospital for examination. The patient was diagnosed with allergic conjunctivitis and was prescribed eye drops by the doctor with the instruction to use them within 1 week and only use the prescription prescribed by the doctor.
After using the prescription, the patient found it effective, reducing the irritation and itching in his eyes. Since then, whenever he felt irritation or discomfort in his eyes, he would go to the pharmacy to buy the old prescription again to use. This went on for 2 years.

When the family saw that the patient had signs of vision loss, had to use his hands to feel his way around the house, the patient was taken to the hospital for examination. At this time, the patient's condition was severe, with complete atrophy of the optic nerves in both eyes, leading to blindness. Doctors used many methods to treat and lower the patient's eye pressure to reduce pain, but the patient could not regain his vision.
Doctor Thanh recommends that when patients have eye abnormalities, they should not go to the pharmacy to buy eye drops without a doctor's instructions or prescription. What is worrying is that the sale of eye drops containing corticosteroids in pharmacies is very widespread today.
Because these drugs are very effective in reducing symptoms (reducing itching, reducing redness), they are often advised to patients and are trusted by patients. It is worth mentioning that preparations containing corticosteroids require a specialist's prescription and should not be used for more than 1 week.
The fact that patients see symptoms subside quickly and then arbitrarily buy and use it repeatedly is the cause of serious consequences. Patients can get glaucoma, cataracts, diseases that progress silently causing blindness. When patients have abnormal signs of eye problems, they need to visit a specialized medical facility for diagnosis and proper treatment, limiting unfortunate complications later.
