On the afternoon of September 20, the Vietnamese futsal team won 9-1 against Hong Kong in the opening match of the qualifying round of Group E of the 2026 Asian Futsal Championship held in China.
With a difference of nearly 100 places on the FIFA rankings (26th in the world compared to 123rd), the Vietnamese futsal team easily overwhelmed Hong Kong from the very first minutes.
But it wasn’t until the 5th minute that coach Diego Giustozzi’s team could open the scoring. Chau Doan Phat had a decisive shot that sent the ball through the opposing goalkeeper’s legs. A minute later, Nguyen Thinh Phat raised the score to 2-0.
From minute 10 to the end of the first half, the Vietnamese futsal team scored 3 more goals thanks to Nhan Gia Hung, Da Hai and captain Pham Duc Hoa.
Right at the beginning of the second half, the Hong Kong futsal team unexpectedly scored a goal to reduce the score to 1-5 after Lee Ho Yin's shot. However, that was all the team could do in the second half.
Less than a minute after conceding the goal, the Vietnamese futsal team increased the score to 6-1 thanks to Tu Minh Quang.
The turning point of the match came in the 32nd minute, when Chow Ka Lok received a red card after a dangerous tackle. As a result, the opponent of the Vietnamese futsal team had to play with one less player for 2 minutes.
Taking advantage of that, the Vietnamese futsal team scored two goals in the 33rd and 34th minutes to lead 8-1. When all players returned, the Hong Kong futsal team continued to lose another goal in the last second of the match, ending the loss 1-9.
On September 22, the Vietnamese futsal team will meet host China.
