Calling out names to choose residency majors of Top 20 medical majors - Video : HMU
Over the past two days, the call-out for the residency program of Hanoi Medical University has flooded social networking forums such as Facebook and TikTok. This is considered a "specialty" of the school on Match Day, which takes place every September 9th.
Calling out names to choose medical residency specialties causes a "fever"
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Tu - Principal of Hanoi Medical University - said that this year's residency exam of Hanoi Medical University had the largest number of candidates ever with 987 people registering for the exam, while the quota was only 426.
After a rigorous selection exam, only 690 people passed the minimum score threshold and had the opportunity to be selected for the residency program.
Because each major has a limited quota, the right to choose is ranked in order of test scores from high to low, when the quota is full, the candidates behind have no right to choose. This principle has created a suspenseful and dramatic atmosphere of selection.

Match Day results - calling out names to choose majors, plastic surgery (6 spots) finished first at candidate number 26; obstetrics and gynecology (15 spots) finished at number 33; anesthesia and resuscitation (8 spots) finished at position 51; cancer (15 spots) finished at number 75...
From number 427, candidates were called to choose their major when some of the candidates ranked higher refused to register. The choice of major ended at number 488 with the major of human anatomy at Thanh Hoa branch.
Under the posts shared on social networks, many people expressed their admiration for the new resident doctors and "wished blessings" for their children. Some even compared the call-out of names to choose the entire medical residency program to be more attractive than the call-out of names in beauty pageants such as Miss Grand, Miss Universe...
It has been suggested that Match Day should be broadcast live on television in future years so that people can see the "essence of the country".

"An idle resident doctor will not become a good specialist"
Before the new doctors of the 50th residency course made their choice of specialty, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Tu - Principal of Hanoi Medical University, had some heartfelt advice for the residency candidates.
According to Mr. Tu, the special thing about the medical industry is that sometimes "the profession chooses the person" rather than "the person chooses the profession".
"Previously, only the top candidate in the residency exam could choose a major, the rest were assigned. But now, most of the school's leading professors were not the ones who had topped the residency exam. Therefore, you can rest assured that if you cannot choose a career you love, the career will choose you. If you try hard, you will succeed," said Mr. Tu.
According to him, no residency is easy. If you want to become a famous expert, all residency programs are equally difficult. You have to struggle equally, dedicate yourself equally, try equally, and persevere equally. "Easy means you will not become a good expert."
During the 3 years of boarding school, he said this was the most difficult period, much more difficult than when he was a student. When he was a student, he only cared about studying and taking exams, but boarding school meant he had to work. He had to meet the requirements of the teacher, the hospital, the department, and the school.
"Don't think that once you pass the residency and choose the major you like, you only need to graduate with a degree. That's not the true meaning of residency. The 3-year residency is for training, practice, and you can even call it cultivation. You have to prepare mentally and be determined," Mr. Tu advised.
Only one time per person
The residency exam of Hanoi Medical University is usually held in August every year, for students who have just graduated from the fields of medicine, traditional medicine, and dentistry. Each person can only take the exam once.
To date, more than 5,000 people have passed the residency exam of Hanoi Medical University. Before 2016, candidates for residency were allowed to register their major preferences before taking the exam. There was a time when only the top students were allowed to choose the residency major, the rest were assigned by the school.
In 2025, Hanoi Medical University will train 38 resident medical specialties. The resident medical quota is 426, of which 402 are for Hanoi Medical University; 13 are for Thanh Hoa branch; 6 are for Lao Cai Department of Health; 5 are for Thai Nguyen Central Hospital.
