Application of science and technology in seedling production

The Paper Materials Research Institute is a unit under the Vietnam Paper Corporation, performing the task of participating in building a planning strategy and developing the paper materials industry; researching and applying advanced technology in improving varieties and breeding to create seedlings, seeds, and silvicultural techniques, contributing to improving productivity, quality, and value of planted forests providing wood and paper materials.

In recent years, the Institute has focused on prioritizing applied research and technology development to create new forestry plant varieties such as eucalyptus, hybrid acacia or modern propagation technology using tissue culture; silvicultural techniques, pest and disease control, high-tech applications in seedling production, promptly meeting the demand for forest seedlings of the paper industry, organizations and individuals in the area.

Along with that, the Institute continues to select and introduce varieties, crossbreeding to find new varieties with high productivity and good disease resistance to supplement the national seed source; research on forest planting density, land preparation, fertilizers, mixed forest planting... From there, build intensive forest planting processes applicable to paper raw material forest planting areas.

For seedling production and trading activities, the Institute strengthens and expands cooperation with domestic and foreign organizations to maximize support and coordination in building and organizing the implementation of tasks. Building strategies towards improving competitiveness in product variety and quality, constantly improving and innovating technology, creating changes in labor productivity, and reducing production costs.

With the success in selecting, creating, propagating and applying the results to production, the Institute annually produces nearly 3 million tissue culture seedlings to serve the needs of forestation, of which nearly 2 million tissue culture seedlings are provided to Phu Tho province. It is expected that by 2025, the Institute will produce about 6 million tissue culture seedlings/year.

The application of science and technology in production and selection of seedlings is a very important measure to achieve high productivity. To obtain good tree varieties for afforestation, in addition to selecting suitable varieties, research and creation of new varieties at the Institute with desired characteristics and measures to propagate and produce those varieties in large quantities to meet the needs of afforestation is very necessary.

For afforestation programs, to be successful, the first thing that is indispensable is to choose the right tree varieties. In fact, the productivity of paper raw material forests in our country is still low compared to other countries, and the quality of the forests is not high. This reduces the economic efficiency of paper raw material forest plantation business. Therefore, the application of science and technology to research and produce tree varieties, evaluate the adaptability, growth and development of forestry trees, meet the needs of increasing productivity, quality and expanding the planting area of ​​paper raw material trees is necessary.

Comrade Nguyen Van Chinh - Head of Phu Ninh District Forest Protection Department shared: The Paper Plant Research Institute located in Phu Ninh Commune, Phu Ninh District has created favorable conditions for seedlings not only for the district but also provided standard seedlings for the locality, promptly meeting the forest planting needs of the people. In recent years, the Institute has applied the tissue culture process of new varieties with high productivity and quality to put into production to replace the varieties that have been used for many years. The seedlings supplied by the Institute to the market grow well, adapt to the soil and climate of Phu Tho province in general, Phu Ninh district in particular, with short cultivation time and high productivity, contributing to economic efficiency and improving the quality of new varieties in forest planting.
