Prioritizing OECD membership, Argentina faces 'some issues to resolve'

On December 23, Argentina's new Foreign Minister, Diana Mondino, said that negotiations to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is one of the foreign policy priorities of the government of President Javier Milei, who took office on December 10.

A statement issued the same day by the Argentine Foreign Ministry emphasized that the government of Mr. Milei, an economic liberal, will continue to strongly promote negotiations to join the OECD.

Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia began negotiations to join the OECD in January 2022. Candidate countries must undergo a rigorous assessment process with many standards and practices to join the organization by more than 20 Technical Committees. In mid-2022, the OECD announced that it had approved a roadmap to admit two South American countries, Brazil and Peru.

OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann has said that although there has been positive progress with Argentina on the next steps in the process of joining the organization, the two sides still have “a number of issues to resolve.” Currently, only Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica are Latin American countries that have joined the OECD.

Argentine Foreign Minister Mondino stressed the priority of negotiating a free trade agreement between the South American Common Market (Mercosur) and the European Union (EU) to soon sign the agreement, together with member countries including Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
