In contrast to previous years, right from the beginning of the 2024 harvest, areca nut prices set a record with a purchase price of 40,000 - 50,000 VND/kg of fresh fruit and then continued to increase.

And currently the price of fresh areca nuts is at an unprecedented record level in Quang Ngai province, with the fruit sold at the garden at over 82,000 VND/kg, areca growers in Quang Ngai excitedly said.

After more than a decade of growing areca trees, Mr. Bui Thanh Vien, in Hanh Duc commune, Nghia Hanh district (Quang Ngai province), said that gold prices sometimes increase and sometimes decrease, but not for areca trees in this season.

Because from the beginning of the areca season until now, the price of areca nuts has never decreased, but only continuously increased.

There was a time when, right after selling at 60,000-70,000 VND/kg of fresh areca nuts, many people regretted it the next day when traders came to their house to buy them at more than 75,000 VND/kg.

Sharing the joy of the "golden season" with people in the "areca orchards" of the plains, the joy of growers in the "areca orchard capital" of Son Tay mountainous district has increased many times, when the amount of money earned from selling areca nuts this year of many families here is currently calculated in hundreds of millions of dong.

Ms. Dinh Thi Viu, in Son Dung commune, Son Tay district (Quang Ngai province) is excited, her family's areca plantation currently has more than 300 trees ready for harvest.

Just counting the sale just over a month ago, when the price of areca nuts was just over 70,000 VND/kg of fresh fruit, over 60 million VND was earned.

Not only Ms. Viu's family, with the high and continuously increasing price of areca nuts in this year's harvest 2024, has brought tens of billions of dong to growers in the "areca land" of Son Tay district and many districts in the Quang Ngai delta.

And the income from this crop for Quang Ngai people certainly will not stop at the above number because this year's areca harvest has not ended yet.

It is known that unlike some other traditional crops, for many decades, areca trees have not only brought in extra income, but also created landscapes and shade, so they have become an indispensable tree in home gardens for thousands of households in the plains and mountains of Quang Ngai.

Accordingly, there were many times when the price of areca nuts "dropped" miserably, to the point that no one even wanted to buy them, and the ripe fruits had to fall all over the ground, but growers did not cut them all down, but kept them.

Along with some localities in the delta that are considered the "barnacles" of this tree, such as Nghia Hanh district, Mo Duc district (Quang Ngai province), with an area of ​​400-700 hectares/district; Son Tay district is where areca is grown the most, with an estimated area of ​​more than 1,000 hectares.
