The Beauty of Sadness

Việt NamViệt Nam12/01/2025

“Dreams at Morisaki Bookstore” depicts the life of Kanda Jimbocho and Kanda Brazil Coffee. The central character is Takako, a young girl in her twenties who lost both her lover and her job at the same time, living sad days, sleeping 15 hours a day to forget the present. To help her daughter escape the lonely days, Takako’s mother asked her uncle Satoru, who was with her since childhood, to call her to take care of the Morisaki used bookstore. With the wish that Takako could enjoy the long holidays at Morisaki Bookstore, Satoru helped Takako “explore” Kanda Jimbocho with more than 170 used bookstores, coffee shops, bars…

As someone who has never had a passion for books, Takako gradually became acquainted with names such as Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Natsume Soseki, Mori Ogai... and many famous works of Japanese literature with many characters' fates to experience, to have a richer multi-dimensional view of life. From the world of books, Takako realized: "That I have not yet put any period on that matter. I am just temporarily putting it aside, waiting for time to help erode my memories." Especially on a chance occasion, when reading the book "Mindscape" by Kajii Motojirou, Takako came across a reader's "sympathetic" underline, a bookmark made of dried flower petals... and saw herself more clearly through it. Finally, thanks to her uncle's inspiration for her love of books, after a period of rest at the old bookstore Morisaki, Takako gradually opened her heart to get to know new people and learn new habits. Takako slowly heals from things she didn't care about before.

Reader Nguyen Thi Nguyen in Tien Thanh ward, Dong Xoai city shared: Like Takako, young people will have periods of extreme boredom and loneliness, but it is very difficult to share with anyone for many reasons. Many people can forget with short-term joys such as beer, alcohol, traveling ... but in the end still cannot solve their problems thoroughly. "Dreams at Morisaki Bookstore" has helped readers realize that only by facing their own sadness, accepting and overcoming it can they find a better version of themselves. Takako and her nephew have helped me realize that books are an effective cure for loneliness, helping me understand myself more deeply and see life as more joyful.

While Vietnamese people easily express their emotions, Japanese people often hide behind a standard appearance. Some people appear calm on the outside but inside they are filled with fierce undercurrents. With a gentle pen, the author has led readers to explore the mysteries of the human soul, a place that no one is sure they can fully grasp. Reading "Dreams at Morisaki Bookstore", readers will feel a little sad, but that sadness helps to deepen understanding and sharing. As the character Satoru said to his niece: "It's not simply a matter of where, but a matter of the heart. No matter where or with whom, as long as you can be honest with your heart, that will be the place for you." And thanks to the clear and delicate writing style, the book brings readers a positive, bright feeling with the message "the road ahead is worth our hope and expectation". We invite readers to read and recommend it to many people to read.

“Dreams at Morisaki Bookstore” won the Chiyoda Literary Prize (award of Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo), and was made into a film , with actress Kikuchi Akiko playing the lead role of Takako.
