Why has the President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation been absent for many months? What should VBF do?

Yesterday, September 4, the Vietnamese martial arts community was "stirred up" by the news that the President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation (VBF), Luu Tu Bao, had been absent for many months, not directly managing the work and may be facing legal trouble.

Faced with conflicting information, the Vietnam Sports Administration requested the VBF Standing Committee to hold an urgent meeting on the afternoon of September 4 to investigate and resolve the matter and report to the responsible agency. VBF also hoped that Mr. Luu Tu Bao, as a member of the VBF Standing Committee, would attend. However, for various reasons, the VBF President was absent.

Mr. Liu Xiu Bao has been in the US for 7 months and still has not returned to Vietnam.

At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung, Vice President and General Secretary of VBF, shared that Mr. Luu Tu Bao's involvement in the drug trafficking case that the foreign news site reported was unverified information. Mr. Hung said that in the most recent phone call in early August 2025, Mr. Bao said that he was involved in another legal case in the US and was being resolved. A noteworthy piece of information in this conversation was that Mr. Bao also pledged to continue to ensure sufficient operating funds for VBF. However, since then, Mr. Hung has not been able to contact Mr. Bao. The VBF Standing Committee proposed that Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung ask Mr. Luu Tu Bao to send a power of attorney to hand over the work.

Today, the VBF Executive Committee met to hear the report of the incident from the Standing Committee, and at the same time, deploy the work plan for the coming time in the absence of Mr. Luu Tu Bao. VBF will send a full report to the Ministry of Home Affairs and ask for written instructions, ensuring that the incident is handled in accordance with legal regulations and organizational regulations. After the meeting, VBF will also have a press release sent to the media and fans.

The sports industry has also asked the authorities in Vietnam to verify information related to the VBF President. In the unlikely event that something goes wrong, it is likely that the VBF will have to hold an early congress to elect a new president. At the congress for the 2023-2028 term, Mr. Luu Tu Bao was elected president with an absolute vote of confidence.

Mr. Luu Tu Bao was born in 1976, holding dual Vietnamese and American citizenship. In addition to serving as President of VBF, he is also the President of the Ho Chi Minh City Mixed Martial Arts Federation for the 2022-2027 term, President of the Saigon Sports Club, and has participated in organizing many domestic and international martial arts events in Vietnam in the past 9 years. At the end of February 2025, he returned to the US to resolve family matters and has not returned to Vietnam yet.
