On the morning of January 2, Mr. Le Xuan Hung, Deputy Director of Quang Nam Maritime Port Authority, said that regarding the unmanned foreign ship stranded in the waters of Cu Lao Cham (Tan Hiep commune, Hoi An city, Quang Nam), the ship owner has not yet towed the ship out of the waters of Cu Lao Cham.
According to Mr. Hung, the ship owner has contacted the authorities of Quang Nam province, but due to the bad weather this season and rough seas, it is impossible to tow the ship.

The authorities have asked the ship owner to come up with a towing plan. During this time, the authorities have installed buoys around the ship to prevent oil spills into the marine reserve. At the same time, the authorities are also on duty at the area where the ship is anchored to be ready to respond to oil and chemical spills.
Meanwhile, the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area Management Board said that the ship owner and authorities are currently working to remove the oil from the ship, and this work is nearing completion. The estimated amount of oil remaining in the ship's tanks is about 30,000 liters.
In addition, the ship owner and the authorities are discussing a plan to patch the holes and refloat the ship so it can be towed to a treatment facility. The reserve has asked the ship owner to tow it out of the reserve and carry out cleaning work so as not to affect the environment.
After the ship drifted and ran aground in Vietnam, the ship owner authorized an insurance agent in Da Nang to carry out the handling procedures. This agent has now sold the ship to a third party.
Regarding this issue, recently Major General Pham Van Ty, Deputy Chief of Office of the National Committee for Incident, Disaster Response and Search and Rescue, Deputy Director of the Department of Search and Rescue ( Ministry of National Defense ), chaired a working session with relevant units on the plan to handle the incident and protect the environment due to the King Rich ship drifting into the waters of Cu Lao Cham.
Major General Pham Van Ty requested that careful calculations be made to avoid any incidents, especially in the Cu Lao Cham conservation area. At the same time, he said that the vessel was operating normally, but when an accident occurred, the crew left the vessel in accordance with regulations. Therefore, when the vessel drifted into our country's territory, favorable conditions must be created for the ship owner to tow the vessel and retrieve the property.
As Thanh Nien reported, at around 10:30 a.m. on December 1, 2023, the King Rich ship drifted ashore on Cu Lao Cham Island. At 11:05 a.m. the same day, the ship ran aground in the Pineapple Beach area (Bai Huong village, Tan Hiep island commune).
The King Rich ship, whose nationality is Sierra Leone (West Africa), has a tonnage of nearly 14,000 tons, a length of 132 meters, and a width of 21 meters, is owned by Kindom Company Limited with registered headquarters in Tainan City (Taiwan).
The ship, which had departed from Kaohsiung port (Taiwan), encountered bad weather while approaching Philippine waters and the ship's propeller shaft broke. All 16 crew members were rescued by a nearby ship and then handed over to the Philippine Coast Guard.
Currently, on board the ship there are a total of 22 oil-free tanks in the cargo holds, and in the engine room there are a total of 8 oil tanks (6 FO tanks, 2 DO tanks) used to run the ship's engines.
