Awakening the land's past
At the end of 2023, on the coast of Cam An (Hoi An Tay ward), a shipwreck suspected to be an ancient ship was discovered. Experts from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University conducted a field survey afterward.
Preliminary assessment from experts, this ship is a rare and precious maritime cultural heritage of Vietnam, with extremely important historical and scientific value, helping to reveal the maritime and commercial history of Hoi An and Vietnam in the past. Besides, this is also a rare "treasure" of an ancient ship that is quite intact, not only of Vietnam but also of Southeast Asia and East Asia.
The discovery of this unique ship, along with the occasional discovery in localities of sites and artifacts from the Sa Huynh - Lam Ap - Champa - Dai Viet period at My Son, the sea of Hoi An or Cu Lao Cham, reinforces the assessment of the late professor Tran Quoc Vuong about the special ecological "axis" of Quang region from Nui Chua (at the foot of the mountain is the My Son sanctuary) - Tra Kieu citadel - Hoi An trading port down to Cu Lao Cham port.
The relics and antiquities discovered, although silent for hundreds of years over the vicissitudes of time, still contain many interesting things, leading the interest of researchers about the openness of ancient Quang land, creating a catalyst for development in the new context.
For example, excavations at Bai Lang (Tan Hiep island commune) have yielded a rich collection of artifacts, including types discovered for the first time in Vietnam such as household items and Middle Eastern glass jewelry. This site is also the location with the most Middle Eastern ceramics known in Vietnam today.
Notably, Middle Eastern ceramics and glass were also found at Nam Tho Son wharf (Ngu Hanh Son ward). This feature can also be a unique detail to research and exploit in the context of the new Da Nang city actively promoting cooperation with the Middle East market.
Materials for “timeless” travel
Mr. Le Tan Thanh Tung - Deputy General Director of VITRACO Tourism, Transportation and Events Company said: "One of the prominent tourism trends in 2025 and will continue in the coming time is the trend of looking back to the past. The more modern it is, the more tourists want to find old things that have been lost over time."
The main trend of this trend is that tourists prefer to explore the heritage values that still exist or are arranged for them to feel the traces of old life. The rest, archaeological tourism is still a relatively new field but has many potential opportunities to enrich the destination of Quang which is already rich in identity.
The Travel (Canada) once ranked Hoi An ancient town at number 7 in the top 10 most wonderful destinations with timeless beauty that helps visitors to find the past and explore history vividly. Bringing visitors to "touch" the archaeological layers to deeply feel the timeless beauty of this land is an interesting tourism trend.
Taking advantage of the exhibition of national treasures within the framework of the event "Quang Nam Culture, Sports and Tourism Days 2025" taking place in June, there were ideas proposed to bring the boat discovered on the coast of Cam An for the public to admire, adding a vivid slice of heritage to attract tourists.
Previously, there were proposals to establish a specialized exhibition house or museum in Cu Lao Cham so that visitors could access archaeological artifacts discovered on the island and in the waters of Hoi An. According to historical experts, it is also possible to establish an open-air museum right at the Bai Lang archaeological site and Bai Ong archaeological site (these relics have all been ranked as national relics) to increase the realism for visitors to feel.
More broadly, is it possible to establish a seamless “archaeological map” from the source down to the sea for tourists to explore the colors of the many civilizations that once existed and intersected in Quang Nam? There, in addition to the combined experiential services provided, who knows, tourists themselves might find the story of their land and country on their adventure journey...
