Many majors have a standard score of over 9 points per subject; some majors even have a ceiling of 30 points for new candidates to be admitted. This shows that the teaching profession is having a strong attraction.
Many industries have "ceiling" benchmark scores
According to the announcement of the University of Foreign Languages ( Hanoi National University), the benchmark score for English Pedagogy and Chinese Pedagogy is 30. Associate Professor Dr. Ha Le Kim Anh - Vice Principal analyzed that although there is no 10 score for Literature in the high school graduation exam, the benchmark score is still absolutely high due to bonus points, partly due to the conversion of foreign language certificates. Accordingly, candidates with an IELTS certificate of 7.5 or higher will be converted to a 10 score in English.
In addition, the school uses many admission combinations to create the best conditions for candidates, not just the combination of Math, Literature, and Foreign Language. That means the school uses a balance of both natural sciences and social sciences. Candidates with strengths in natural sciences can register for admission with a combination of Math and natural subjects. Those with strengths in social sciences can register for Literature and social subjects. "Therefore, you can optimize your abilities and get an absolutely high standard score," Associate Professor Dr. Ha Le Kim Anh explained.
According to the leaders of the University of Foreign Languages (Hanoi National University), there are 3 reasons why the benchmark scores for the two majors of English Pedagogy and Chinese Pedagogy reached 30/30 points. Firstly, recently, the pedagogical majors have had many preferential policies from the State, so they attract the attention of candidates. More importantly, many good candidates with high test scores also want to enroll in pedagogical majors and become teachers in the future.
Second, for many years now, the English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Pedagogy majors have had a large number of applicants. In 2025, the number of applicants will be much higher. Third, candidates who win provincial-level excellent student awards and Hanoi National University Olympia High School Awards will receive bonus points.
“Currently, there is still a shortage of foreign language teachers across the country, especially English teachers, so many excellent students enrolling in the pedagogical field is a good sign,” Associate Professor Dr. Ha Le Kim Anh acknowledged, adding that when Vietnam implements the project to make English the second language in universities, the University of Foreign Languages hopes that the Ministry of Education and Training will increase the quota for the Foreign Language Pedagogy field, especially English Pedagogy, to create more opportunities for candidates.

"Policy boost"
Although the benchmark score is less than 30 points, some majors of the University of Education (Hanoi National University) also have a benchmark score of 9 points/subject such as: History - Geography Pedagogy, the benchmark score is 29.84. This year, 10 teacher training majors of this school have benchmark scores of over 25 to nearly 30 points.
Explaining the high standard score for pedagogy, Professor Dr. Nguyen Quy Thanh - Principal of the University of Education (Hanoi National University) said: "Studying pedagogy, education is subsidized by the State and after graduating, the salary is ranked highest in the administrative career salary scale are two factors that strongly influence the choice of candidates."
Also according to the Principal of the University of Education (Hanoi National University), according to regulations, teacher training majors must have a quality assurance threshold (floor score). This floor score has eliminated all low-scoring candidates, leaving only high-scoring candidates to compete. Finally, there is a policy of adding priority points to subjects, bonus points for students with excellent student competitions, high IELTS scores, etc.
The reason for the increase in the standard score for the pedagogical industry is due to the "boost" from preferential policies for teacher training, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan - Vice Principal of the University of Education (Hue University) commented. Recently, the Law on Teachers was passed with many preferential policies and regimes for teachers such as teachers' salaries being ranked highest in the administrative career salary scale system with allowance policies.
The Law on Teachers also enhances the status of teachers and policies to ensure their rights. These policies have attracted great interest from candidates for the teaching profession.
“In 2025, the University of Education (Hue University) was assigned 2,300 quotas but there were more than 22,000 applications, a “competition” ratio of nearly 1/10. This helps pedagogical schools to select good and excellent students to train future generations of teachers,” Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan emphasized.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Son - Principal of Hanoi National University of Education said that the passing of the Law on Teachers has motivated many students to pursue teaching. He said that the number of students who won national excellent student awards from third prize and above who applied and were eligible to be admitted to Hanoi National University of Education is more than 500 (last year about 300 and directly enrolled about 100).
