Year-end jobs: Wide open opportunities, lurking risks

At the end of the year, recruitment demand increases sharply, opening up many job opportunities for workers. However, experts warn that along with opportunities come many risks from short-term contracts, unsecured benefits, to non-transparent recruitment tricks, requiring alertness in choosing.

Year-end recruitment is often more active than other periods of the year. This is the time when businesses simultaneously boost production and business to meet order progress and meet increased market demand during holidays and Tet. The sudden increase in human resource demand creates many job opportunities, especially in the fields of services, trade, transportation, garment, processing, supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, logistics... Businesses need more unskilled workers, and at the same time expand recruitment for shift management positions, warehouse supervisors, sales staff, customer care, drivers, delivery...

However, along with attractive opportunities, workers face many risks. In fact, there have been many cases where businesses or temporary recruitment units have provided unclear information, leading to loose contracts, salaries that are not as committed, or unsafe working conditions. Some workers are also forced to work excessive overtime without clear agreements on overtime wages, or have many unreasonable deductions.

Seasonal workers face many risks

Dr. Nguyen Minh Phong, former Head of the Economic Research Department, Hanoi Institute for Socio-Economic Development, said that the year-end labor market often reflects quite clearly the trend of the socio-economic movement. Accordingly, the scale and diversity in recruitment will certainly increase when businesses boost investment and production to complete contracts, take advantage of business opportunities at the end of the year, holidays, Tet or add more orders for the new year.

New occupations related to the digital economy, e-commerce, express delivery services, and logistics are also likely to increase recruitment demand. In general, short-term and flexible labor will dominate, while long-term or permanent labor tends to decrease. Remote work, part-time work, and working on digital platforms will become more and more popular, reflecting the strong trend of digital transformation as well as changes in the way domestic and foreign businesses operate.

Another factor that strongly impacts the job market at the end of the year is the increase in public investment and the implementation of large national projects and works, which require a large workforce. When these projects are started or accelerated, the real estate, construction and related service markets are also more vibrant, leading to increased recruitment demand. In addition, on occasions of important political , economic and social events or when businesses close their financial books and prepare for the new year's business plan, the demand for temporary human resources also increases significantly.

However, short-term workers face more risks than long-term workers. In theory, they still enjoy benefits such as social insurance and health insurance according to regulations. But in reality, claiming benefits is not easy. The risk is even greater in the context of some businesses operating at a loss, going bankrupt, and owners fleeing, leading to unpaid wages, unpaid insurance, and even trying to force workers to terminate their contracts early to avoid the responsibility of paying salaries and year-end bonuses. Many labor disputes have broken out, from small-scale production facilities to foreign-invested companies.

“Trade unions and authorities have paid attention and intervened to protect workers’ rights, but only to a certain extent, not covering all actual needs and aspirations. Therefore, to limit risks, workers need to carefully consider two important factors: the socio-economic context and their own capacity. In particular, improving professional qualifications and skills to become an irreplaceable workforce is a fundamental solution. At the same time, it is necessary to be alert when choosing a job, prioritizing long-term stability instead of chasing high short-term salaries or bonuses from jobs that lack commitment, prestige and social responsibility,” Dr. Nguyen Minh Phong emphasized.

Benefits - the key to retaining employees

Mr. Vu Quang Thanh, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Employment Service Center, said that in order to attract workers at the end of the year, businesses need to pay special attention to the policies, benefits and welfare that come with the job position. In addition to job requirements, what employees care about most when choosing a business is salary, income, allowances, bonuses, and the attention and facilitation from the employer. This is the key factor for businesses to be able to recruit enough staff, ensuring the completion of orders and production and business plans during peak periods.

Mr. Thanh emphasized that the labor market has a common income level, depending on the severity, long-term or short-term nature of each job position. “In terms of skill requirements, each job position has its own criteria. For jobs that require qualifications, in addition to professional knowledge, workers need to have the ability to work independently, work in groups, communication skills, problem-solving skills and other soft skills to adapt well to the office environment. In addition, the ability to apply technology, a positive work attitude and flexibility are also important factors that help workers score points in the eyes of employers. For ordinary workers, in addition to health, what businesses prioritize is still attitude, sense of responsibility and commitment to work,” said Mr. Vu Quang Thanh.

“The labor market has a common income level, depending on the nature of each job, whether it is long-term or short-term. In reality, there is no such thing as “easy work, high salary” as advertised on social networks. This is often a trick to exploit the gullibility or desire to make quick money of some workers, leading to unfortunate risks. Therefore, workers need to be careful when accessing recruitment information, carefully learn about the business, job position, benefits, regimes as well as how to sign a contract to avoid falling into a scam trap.”

According to Mr. Thanh, the Hanoi Employment Service Center organizes more than 20 job fairs each month, with the participation of hundreds of businesses in many different fields. From now until the end of the year, there are expected to be about 70 fairs, focusing on daily fairs at the job fair system in Trung Kinh (Hanoi) and 14 satellite fairs. In addition, there will be specialized and online fairs connecting with the northern provinces, along with mobile fairs at communes and wards under the direction of the city and the Department of Home Affairs. These activities are expected to contribute to connecting labor supply and demand, creating more sustainable job opportunities, helping workers choose suitable jobs at the end of the year.

Not only creating a bridge, job exchanges are also a place where workers can receive free advice on interview skills, how to write a job application, as well as access to official and transparent recruitment information. This is an important solution to limit the situation of fraud and illegal job brokerage that is on the rise in cyberspace.
