During his visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic and co-chairing the 47th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Intergovernmental Committee, on the morning of January 10, in the capital Vientiane, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Lao General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith.
General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith expressed his pleasure at welcoming Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Laos; emphasizing that the visit marks an important milestone for the Intergovernmental Committee; affirming that the Lao Party, State and people always attach importance to and give the highest priority to the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam, considering it a priceless asset of strategic importance to the revolutionary cause of the two countries.
Expressing his thanks and warm regards to General Secretary To Lam, President Luong Cuong, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and other leaders of the Party, State, National Assembly and people of Vietnam, General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith warmly congratulated and shared the joy with the Vietnamese people when the Vietnamese football team won the championship at the recent ASEAN Cup 2024.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his emotion and joy at meeting again with General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith - a close comrade and friend of the leaders and people of Vietnam; respectfully conveyed the regards and best wishes of health from General Secretary To Lam, President Luong Cuong, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and other leaders of the Party and State of Vietnam to General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated Laos on its achievements in 2024 and believed that under the wise leadership of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party headed by Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith, the Lao Party, State and people will continue to achieve even greater successes in successfully implementing the Resolutions of the 11th Party Congress and the 9th Five-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh shared with the Lao General Secretary and President the outstanding results of his talks with Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and the 47th Meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Intergovernmental Committee as well as the Vietnam-Laos Cooperation and Investment Conference 2025; emphasizing that the two sides have reviewed bilateral cooperation in all fields since the 46th Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of the two countries, thoroughly resolved many outstanding issues and proposed directions for bilateral cooperation in 2025.
The two sides were pleased that bilateral relations continued to deepen and be substantive in all areas, focusing on key points; political cooperation was increasingly trustworthy and close, especially the regular maintenance of high-level and all-level exchanges and contacts; defense-security cooperation continued to be an important pillar of bilateral relations; economic, trade and investment cooperation continued to develop strongly when the total bilateral import-export turnover was estimated at 2.2 billion USD, exceeding the 2 billion USD mark set by both sides, striving to increase the turnover between the two countries to 5 billion USD in the coming time.
Along with that, we will continue to support each other in building an independent, self-reliant economy, with deep and effective international integration; cultural and educational cooperation, people-to-people exchange and cooperation between localities will continue to develop strongly; we will continue to exchange high-level delegations, especially on the occasion of major events of the two countries, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity, attachment and determination to complete the set goals.
Welcoming the results of the 47th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee, General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith highly appreciated the resolute direction of the Vietnamese Politburo, especially General Secretary To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, in implementing high-level cooperation agreements and plans, with the emphasis on thoroughly resolving difficulties and obstacles of many projects.
On this occasion, General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith fully agreed with and highly appreciated the two countries' Governments, departments and localities' great efforts and determination to promote bilateral cooperation in a breakthrough direction, with focus and key points; requested that the two countries' departments and agencies focus highly on and actively implement the results agreed upon by the two countries' leaders; at the same time, requested that the two sides further strengthen the connection between the two Laos-Vietnam economies, especially in finance, infrastructure, transportation, energy, telecommunications and tourism.
At the end of the meeting, the two leaders exchanged best wishes on the occasion of the New Year 2025 and the Lunar New Year 2025.
