Taking advantage of their free time on weekends, Co Tu people in neighboring villages of Ta Bhing commune gather at the community house of Ga Lee village (Ta Bhing commune) to participate in a traditional weaving class. The class is organized by the Provincial Farmers' Association Vocational Training Center in coordination with Nam Giang district, creating favorable conditions to help teach traditional Co Tu weaving skills to the local community.
Mr. Coor Minh - Head of the Co Tu weaving training class in Ta Bhing commune said that the class has nearly 30 students (including 7 women) who are taught weaving skills by 3 artisans of Ta Bhing commune. Through teaching from theory to basic practical skills, students will grasp the process of creating complete, sophisticated products.
“In the past, young people were often not interested in learning to weave, because they thought it was a job for old people. But since this vocational class was established, not only men, but also women have participated.
Because everyone understands that weaving is a very important traditional craft of the Co Tu people, which needs to be preserved and maintained. Especially when the cultural value of weaving is created to serve very well the development of community tourism , helping people to have more income and stabilize their lives" - Mr. Minh shared.
As one of the seven women taking part in the weaving class, Ms. Arat Chien has hardly missed a single class in the past few months. With her determination, Ms. Chien said that learning this traditional craft is an opportunity to earn extra income, as well as contribute to cultural preservation.
That is very appropriate when the local government is making efforts to turn Ta Bhing community tourism spots into cultural spaces with a variety of unique tourism products to serve visitors...
According to Mr. Nguyen Dang Chuong - Vice Chairman of Nam Giang District People's Committee, with the advantage of abundant raw materials such as rattan, bamboo, reed... in recent times, the locality has taken advantage of resources from projects and programs, proactively trained and restored traditional craft villages of ethnic minorities; including the weaving craft of the Co Tu people.
Through training classes and short-term courses in recent times, a number of traditional craft villages have gradually restored and developed in the form of cooperatives, household groups and families.
Co Tu woven products such as baskets, winnowing trays, etc. have become favorite souvenirs for tourists. Thereby, contributing to creating jobs, increasing income for many Co Tu households, promoting economic restructuring in agriculture and rural areas in the locality.
