Advantages of U.17 Vietnam
Vietnam U.17 entered the 2025 AFC U.17 qualifying campaign from October 23 to 27, when coach Cristiano Roland and his team were in Group I with opponents Myanmar U.17, Kyrgyzstan U.17 and Yemen U.17.
According to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) schedule, U.17 Vietnam will open the qualifying round with a match against U.17 Kyrgyzstan, taking place at 7:00 p.m. on October 23. Then, at 7:00 p.m. on October 25, Mr. Roland's students will face U.17 Myanmar. In the final match at 7:00 p.m. on October 27, U.17 Vietnam will face U.17 Yemen.
The matches in Group I of the 2025 AFC U17 Championship qualifiers all took place at Phu Tho Stadium (Phu Tho province) and were broadcast live onFPT Play.
Matches in the U.17 Asian qualifiers are broadcast live on FPT Play
U.17 Vietnam has arrived in Phu Tho to practice since October 17 to best prepare for three matches in the qualifying round.
"The whole team will try their best in the 2025 U.17 Asian qualifiers, determined to complete the mission to not disappoint the fans' expectations," coach Roland affirmed.
Vietnam U.17 is expected in the U.17 Asian qualifiers, because this is the core squad that together won the runner-up position in the 2024 Peace Cup friendly tournament in China.
Mr. Roland's team, then known as U.16 Vietnam, defeated U.16 Uzbekistan with a score of 3-0. In the final round, Coach Roland's students continued to stun when they defeated U.16 Japan with a score of 1-0, thereby winning the runner-up position. Notably, Japan and Uzbekistan are the current champions and runner-up of the U.17 Asia, respectively.
The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has assigned the target of continuing to win tickets to the final round for U.17 Vietnam. Maintaining a presence in the final rounds of U.23, U.20 and U.17 Asia is the goal that VFF has set for the Vietnamese youth teams, aiming to create a bridge for players to accumulate experience and mature through international competition.
Coach Roland and his students are tasked with qualifying for the round.
At the 2023 AFC U17 Championship finals, Vietnam U17 tied with India U17, then lost to Japan U17 (0-4) and Uzbekistan U17 (0-1). Coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his team stopped at the group stage.
Determined to win the top spot
The 2025 AFC U-17 Championship qualifiers initially had 43 teams participating and were divided into 10 groups to compete, including 7 groups of 4 teams and 3 groups of 5 teams. The 10 group winners along with the 5 best second-placed teams will join the host Saudi Arabia in the final round.
However, according to a recent announcement by AFC, the U.17 Lebanon team will not participate due to objective reasons, so group H only has 3 teams left: U.17 Laos, U.17 Malaysia and U.17 UAE.
This causes changes in the calculation of points for the second-placed teams. Specifically, for groups of 4 teams (such as the group of U.17 Vietnam), the second-placed team's performance against the bottom team will not be counted. For groups of 5 teams, the second-placed team's performance against the 4th and 5th-placed teams in the group will not be considered.
Therefore, U.17 Vietnam needs to win the top spot in the group to have the right to decide for themselves. Comparing the goal difference with other second-placed teams (in case of second place) will be riskier due to the change in the way of calculating points.
