“Import-export activities last year still faced many difficulties, although Lao Cai international border gate has been completely cleared, opening up favorable opportunities for import and export of goods for people and businesses. The volume of goods is still much lower than before the Covid-19 pandemic because the customs clearance costs for imported goods on the Ha Khau side (border area with Lao Cai) are much higher than in other localities such as Bang Tuong ( Lang Son ), Dong Hung (Quang Ninh)”, the Department of Industry and Trade stated.

In the first 8 months of 2024, trade in goods improved. Customs clearance of goods at the Lao Cai - Ha Khau international border gate took place smoothly, without congestion or congestion of goods.

The value of import and export, exchange and sale of goods through border gates in the province in the months basically increased compared to the same period in 2023.

Main export items are: durian, peeled wood, dragon fruit, jackfruit, banana, longan... and import items include: flowers, ornamental plants, fresh vegetables and fruits, coke, fertilizer, machinery and equipment, confectionery, electricity...

At present, the value of exported goods has increased sharply compared to previous months, mainly due to the durian crop from the Central Highlands. Imported vegetables and fruits are also in the main season, however, the volume of fertilizers, coke, and chemicals in August is estimated to decrease compared to July 2024 but still high compared to the beginning of the year and the same period in 2023.

The average number of vehicles clearing customs at the border gate is about 500-600 vehicles/day, of which: 160-180 exported vehicles/day; 400-420 imported vehicles/day.

At the international railway station border gate, customs clearance activities are maintained with 4-6 departure and arrival trains/day, with an average monthly import-export value of about 280 million USD.

In the first 8 months of 2024, the total value of import and export, purchase and sale, and exchange of goods through border gates in Lao Cai is estimated at nearly 2.3 billion USD, an increase of 71.65% over the same period in 2023, reaching 50.48% of the plan.

Over the past 8 months, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports are estimated to have reached 4.5 – 4.6 billion USD, up 25% over the same period last year. Of which, durian has made an important contribution to the growth of the fruit and vegetable industry, with an export turnover of over 1.8 billion USD.
