Throughout the night during the transition between the old year and the new year, the work cycle at Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital is still as busy as every day, so that mothers and children can have a safe delivery.
The emergency room is the initial reception area, examining, diagnosing and consulting patients with abnormal signs or signs of labor. At 9pm, there were about 5 pregnant women being examined.
“Dad, I have signs of labor,” the 30-year-old pregnant woman called home to inform her family after receiving the doctor’s diagnosis, her voice both happy and nervous. According to Master, Doctor Nguyen Tuan Minh, since the beginning of the evening shift, about 10 pregnant women have shown signs of labor. After examination, they were transferred to the inpatient departments to wait for delivery.
Many rows of waiting chairs at the D3 Voluntary Delivery Department were filled with expectant mothers’ families. Many people’s faces showed excitement. A 30-year-old man shared that he was “holding his breath” waiting for the moment of becoming a father for the first time.
In the delivery room, Ms. Xuan (34 years old, living in Hanoi) said she was admitted to the hospital on the night of December 30 when she experienced many contractions. "I thought I would have the baby yesterday, but unexpectedly, the baby waited until the new year," she shared.
The young couple said they were both excited and surprised about welcoming their first child at such a special moment. “This will definitely be a special memory for the whole family,” the mother said, rubbing her belly and smiling.
In the next room, pregnant woman Le Thi Phuong Anh was also anxiously counting down to the moment her baby was born. Ms. Anh said that although this was her third baby, the emotions before each birth were like the first. This was even more special when the baby was expected to be born on the first day of the new year.
Outside the corridors of the department, every now and then a cry could be heard, signaling the arrival of a small creature into the world .
Unlike the waiting area for delivery, in the postpartum rooms you can clearly feel the happiness of the families.
“Be good, daddy loves you,” holding his newborn baby in his arms, the young father from Nam Dinh could not take his eyes off him, his face showing joy. He said the baby was born at 10:45 on December 30. The whole family from Nam Dinh was present in Hanoi to welcome the new member.
For pregnant woman Vu Thi Phuong Hue, 28 years old, this year's New Year's Eve is very special. "Every year at this time we go to the lake to participate in the Countdown to welcome the New Year, but this year we didn't expect to have the Countdown in the hospital," the young pregnant woman laughed.
Phuong Hue said that even though she can't go out this year, she received the most precious gift: the safe birth of her first son.
According to Dr. Dinh Huy Cuong, Obstetrics Department, the number of pregnant women waiting to give birth during the transition period between the old year and the new year in the department is 15 people. Similar to other days, the on-duty team is always ready, preparing all plans for the safest delivery for the mother and baby.
23:20, the operating room of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department lights up. The patient about to undergo surgery is Le Nhat Lan (born in 2005).
According to Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, Head of the D3 Obstetrics Service, the fetus was full term but there were no signs of labor. The test results showed that the fetus was large and had a slow heart rate, so we decided to perform a cesarean section immediately to ensure the safety of both mother and child.
The surgery went smoothly, at exactly 0:02 on January 1, 2025, the baby girl named Thuy Chi cried out in the joy of the mother and the doctors.
As the first person to welcome Thuy Chi into the world, Dr. Son said that even though he has been working in the profession for 35 years, every time he welcomes a baby into the world is a special feeling, even more special when this is the first baby born in 2025 at the hospital.
In the operating room next door, baby Tue Anh also cried out after being born just a few minutes later. With a trembling voice, Ms. Pham Thi Trang, 29 years old (Nam Dinh) expressed her happiness when mother and child successfully gave birth at this special moment.
"I hope my child will be safe and be the pride of the family in the future," said the young mother.
