According to court documents released on September 29, technology company YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by US President Donald Trump after the platform suspended his account in connection with the riot at Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.
Of that, 22 million USD will go to the US President, the rest will be paid to the co-plaintiffs.
YouTube, owned by Google, was sued by Mr. Trump in July 2021 for locking his account after the January 6, 2021 incident. Facebook and Twitter (now X) were also sued.
The social media platforms were concerned that the Republican politician 's posts could incite violence, but Trump's lawyer said the decision to block the account was based on "unclear, vague, and constantly changing criteria."
According to the filing, YouTube's settlement money will go toward new construction at the White House through the nonprofit Trust for the National Mall, to support the construction of the White House Ballroom.
Previously, in January 2025, a few days after Mr. Trump took office as president, Meta agreed to pay 25 million USD, of which 22 million USD was for the fund to build Mr. Trump's future Presidential Library.
By February 2025, billionaire Elon Musk's social network X also agreed to pay money to settle a similar lawsuit.
According to the 2025 annual report filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, YouTube's advertising revenue in 2024 will exceed 36 billion USD.
