(CLO) The United States, the country with the highest number of billionaires and millionaires in the world , has witnessed a significant increase in the proportion of net assets held by the richest 1% from 1989 to 2024.

Data from the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) platform shows that from 1989 to 2024, the share of net worth held by the richest 1% of Americans increased significantly.

The share of the richest 1% in the US increased from 22.8% to 30.8% of total national wealth between 1989 and 2024.

The increase in wealth of the richest 1%

Over the past 35 years, the share of the net worth of the richest 1% of Americans in the total net worth of the country has increased sharply, from 22.8% in 1989 to 30.8% in 2024, as shown in the data table below.

Despite small fluctuations over the past decade, the general trend has been one of wealth concentration in the hands of the richest group.

Specifically, the richest 0.1% - the ultra-rich - currently hold 13.8% of the total net worth of the US, while the remaining 0.9% of the 1% group owns 17%. In terms of value, the assets of this 1% group will reach 49.2 trillion USD by 2024.

50% of Americans hold only 2.5% of the wealth

In contrast, the poorest 50% saw their share of total national wealth decline, from 3.5% in 1989 to 2.8% in 2024. This reflects the growing wealth inequality in American society.

This data is reinforced by the US Gini coefficient, a measure of inequality in wealth distribution. Between 1979 and 2022, the US Gini coefficient increased from 34.8 to 41.3, indicating an increase in inequality in wealth distribution.
