9x wins series of million dollar contracts thanks to 'skipping stages'

Nguyen Duy Duc (born in 1994) brought home a series of contracts worth hundreds of millions of USD thanks to his passion for big work since he was an intern.

Duc has held the position of Center Director, managing many senior personnel ofFPT Software in the Southern region since the age of 28.

8 years ago, he was the youngest employee of FPT Software to be sent onsite (to work directly at the partner unit) in the US. Although he only had experience as an intern, he still decided to "reach out to the big sea", conquering the market group with the highest requirements in the world .

Here, the male engineer was under pressure from product requirements, strict standards of capacity, communication difficulties, time zone differences... However, he considered it an opportunity and motivation to "burn the stage", develop skills and knowledge, thereby quickly integrating and meeting the job requirements.

After returning from this trip, his efforts and accumulated abilities in the US helped him become an official employee when he was only a third-year student majoring in Software Engineering at FPT University, Hanoi .

In May 2020, Duc returned to the US as a strategic software solutions architect, specializing in supporting and "rescuing" key projects. In this "advance to the US", he was entrusted with the task of "breaking the ice" of a project worth hundreds of millions of dollars that was delayed due to Covid-19.

Although he arrived in the US during the outbreak of the pandemic and the complicated social situation, the young man only thought about the important task assigned by the company. Overcoming many difficulties, Duc and his teammates quickly brought the project to victory with enthusiasm and talent.

After returning from the onsite trip, the young engineer was supported by the company to buy a house, supported with interest rates to buy a car, awarded a savings package of 500 million VND and appointed as Director of FHM Center (FPT Software Ho Chi Minh City) in 2022.

Duc said he is proud and appreciates the opportunity to participate in large, difficult projects, thereby quickly honing his skills and proving his abilities. "FPT Software is the second largest software company in Vietnam. Therefore, here I get to participate in large projects that require thousands of people. Moreover, here, age is not important, as long as you can do the job," he said.

According to the 9x male engineer, he has trained this spirit of daring to think and daring to do since his student days, when he studied at FPT University instead of famous traditional schools. The school equips students with foreign languages, many soft skills, rich experiences and self-study ability.

Before that, he was a quiet person, afraid of communication and could not speak English. Only when entering the university environment, the former student of FPT University improved his communication, presentation, debate, teamwork and English skills at work.

"Since then, I have had significant changes, confidently speaking in front of crowds and easily working with people," Duc shared.

Duy Duc assessed that the study program here is practical and closely follows the needs of the global software industry because it has the advantage of drawing on the experience of software development of FPT Corporation. Therefore, when he did his internship from the second year, he could catch up very quickly with the actual work because of the similarity with the learning environment.

The male engineer affirmed that the trip to the US at the age of 21, which FPT University and FPT Software gave him, was an opportunity to help him accelerate his career. When he continued studying after the internship, he continued to experience and work directly with customers in the US, from which he became more confident. According to him, a good university is a favorable start for his career.

"Studying while working also helps me gain a lot of practical experience, which I can then apply to make the theoretical part of school subjects easier to understand," Duc added.

With many years of practical experience in the information technology industry, the biggest lesson he learned is not to be afraid of difficult projects with a lot of work. This is a support for students studying this field to accumulate experience and develop themselves. "Always keep your passion for technology, and when you are young. Be naive, don't ask for it, then success will come and be rewarded accordingly," the former FPT University student emphasized.
