Hello doctor: Is living near a construction site with a lot of noise harmful to your health?

'I live near a large construction site, and every day I have to endure noise from early morning to late at night. Recently, I often have headaches and insomnia... Does prolonged exposure to noise affect my health?' (Nguyen Thanh Truc, 35 years old, in Ho Chi Minh City).

Specialist Doctor Ho Thanh Lich, Head of Internal Medicine Department, Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, replied: Prolonged noise with high intensity (exceeding 85 dB) from construction works, traffic, or daily activities can cause headaches by stimulating the nervous system, increasing the body's stress level. Noise-induced headaches are a common health problem among people in big cities. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that noise levels should not exceed 55 dB during the day and 40 dB at night to ensure health.

The harmful effects of noise on health

Prolonged noise can cause three common types of headaches, including tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. People who suffer from these headaches often have recognizable symptoms such as fatigue, pain in the neck and face, and sensitivity to light and noise. Over time, these symptoms can increase irritability and reduce the patient's ability to concentrate.

  • Tension headaches: Often appear with sudden contractions in the muscles at the back of the neck, especially at night when starting to sleep.
  • Migraine: Prolonged pain on one side of the head, accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, blurred vision or tinnitus.
  • Cluster headaches: These are severe pain attacks, often around the eye or on one side of the temple, accompanied by symptoms such as eye pain, stuffy or runny nose, sweating and watery eyes.

Although noise-induced headaches do not pose an immediate danger, if not treated promptly, this condition can last and lead to serious illnesses such as chronic headaches, physical weakness, depression and even kidney and cardiovascular diseases.

Exposure to loud noise can also cause hearing loss and stimulate the body to produce cortisol, which increases blood pressure and heart rate, leading to the risk of stroke . Noise can also cause insomnia - a risk factor for high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

Noise reduction and health protection solutions

Dr. Lich recommends several measures you can take to protect your health and minimize the harmful effects of noise pollution.

Hearing protection: If you live in an area with loud noise, use noise-canceling headphones, earplugs, or other ear protection devices.

Improve living space: Install soundproof glass doors, use double-layer thick curtains, specialized noise-cancelling curtains, etc. to reduce noise in the house. Planting trees around also helps absorb sound from the outside environment.

Adjust your lifestyle: Practice breathing exercises, meditation or yoga to reduce stress. Eat more green vegetables, limit tobacco, beer, alcohol and maintain a regular exercise routine to improve your health.

Medication: Patients can use some painkillers containing ingredients such as paracetamol, aspirin or caffeine. Of which, paracetamol has a faster and more effective effect. However, do not abuse the drug and consult a doctor before using.

If symptoms such as headache and insomnia persist and do not improve, see a doctor for timely examination and treatment.
