Heavy rains in recent days have caused a shortage of green vegetables, causing prices of these items at many traditional markets in Ha Tinh to increase dramatically.

Leafy vegetables at the local market in Ha Tinh increased in price after prolonged rain.

At some traditional markets such as Ha Tinh City market, Nghen market (Can Loc), Cay market (Thach Ha town), prices of green vegetables increased compared to the time before the heavy rain.

Specifically, the price of Chinese cabbage, Chinese broccoli, and Chinese bok choy increased from 5,000 VND/bunch to 10,000 - 15,000 VND/bunch; sweet potato leaves from 10,000 VND/bunch to 12,000 - 15,000 VND/bunch; Malabar spinach from 6,000 VND/bunch to 12,000 VND/bunch; cabbage from 13,000 VND/kg to 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg; squash increased from 8,000 VND/kg to 15,000 VND/kg; tomatoes increased from 30,000 VND/kg to 35,000 VND/kg, green onions also increased from 35,000 VND/kg to 40,000 VND/kg; The price of fruits and vegetables increased by 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg depending on the type compared to nearly a month ago.

According to traders, the reason for the increase in vegetable prices is that vegetable growing areas have encountered heavy rains, causing damage to vegetables and a shortage of supply. In addition, unfavorable weather conditions have also made transporting vegetables more difficult. Meanwhile, some summer-autumn vegetables that are about to end their season, such as Malabar spinach and amaranth, have also decreased in production; and winter vegetables that have just been planted have not yet been harvested.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang - a vegetable vendor at Ha Tinh City market shared: "The heavy rain has damaged many vegetables, making it difficult to get more to sell. Cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, celery, cauliflower, green onions... must be imported from Nghe An or Da Lat, and the flood has caused high transportation costs. The import price is high, so we have to increase the selling price to consumers. Sellers like us do not want the price of vegetables to increase, because that means we have to spend more capital, the profit is not much, and customers will "tighten" their purse strings more."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang - a vegetable vendor at Ha Tinh City market - could only get half the amount of goods compared to normal days.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, a vegetable vendor at Cay market (Thach Ha town), said: "We import most of the vegetables here from vegetable farms in the province, but for nearly a week now, heavy rain has caused the vegetable farms to be flooded. Therefore, the supply of vegetables to the market has become scarcer, and prices have also increased sharply. Many types of green vegetables such as mustard greens, sweet potato greens... have very little supply, I can only get half the quantity compared to normal days and it is difficult to choose good vegetables."

The increase in vegetable prices not only affects the trading activities of small traders but also causes difficulties for many housewives in serving daily meals.

The increase in vegetable prices has forced Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong to consider her daily spending.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong (Nguyen Du Ward, Ha Tinh City) shared: “Usually, my family of 4 buys vegetables for about 20,000 VND, but now, each meal going to the market to buy a few bunches of vegetables with some onions and cilantro costs 35,000 VND. Before, only imported vegetables such as bell peppers, celery... had high prices, but now all vegetables are expensive. I have to go to the market early to buy vegetables from people in the countryside, which are a little cheaper.”

Also having a “headache” because of the increase in vegetable prices, Ms. Tran Thi Minh (Thach Ha town) shared: “I just bought green onions for 5,000 VND, while before, with the same amount of vegetables, I only bought 2,000 VND. Now, when I go to the market, the money to buy vegetables alone is nearly 40,000 VND. Seeing that the prices of tubers and fruits are lower, for the past 2 days, I have bought more instead of buying green vegetables.”

Many types of fruits and vegetables also increased by 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg depending on the type compared to nearly a month ago.

At this time, in vegetable growing areas in Ha Tinh, imported vegetable prices are also higher than many previous times.

Ms. Hoang Thi Hue - a vegetable grower in Bac Binh village, Tuong Son commune (Thach Ha) said: "My family grows more than 1 sao of Malabar spinach, sweet cabbage, squash, and luffa in the garden. Thanks to the drainage system, the garden is not flooded. After the rain, the vegetable area is still growing well. Currently, many types of vegetables and tubers are priced more than double compared to the same period last year. Every day I carry about 60 - 70 kg of vegetables and tubers of all kinds to Binh Huong market to sell. If before I only earned 300 - 400 thousand VND/trip to the market, now each trip I earn 600 - 700 thousand VND".

Ms. Le Thi Men in La Xa village, Tan Lam Huong commune (Thach Ha) collects herbs.

Busily harvesting herbs to supply to traders, Ms. Le Thi Men in La Xa village, Tan Lam Huong commune (Thach Ha) said: "Currently, the price of herbs is high, on average each kg of vegetables imported to traders is from 20,000 to 25,000 VND depending on the type, each day we can earn about 500,000 VND".

According to farmers in the production areas, the weather in the whole province has not improved yet, the rain and humidity still persist at many times of the day, the low temperature makes the plants grow poorly, many plants are dead. Therefore, it is expected that the prices of green vegetables will remain high in the coming time.
