Nearly two years after the serious landslide at Thanh Da embankment, Binh Thanh ward, Ho Chi Minh City, the project to build a solid embankment has not been implemented. People living around this area still have to face constant worries when the high tide and heavy rain season comes.
According to the reporter's records at Thanh Da embankment area, Binh Thanh ward, the landslide section is about 200m long, many embankment pillars have been destroyed by water. The landslide is about 200m long, many embankment pillars have been destroyed by water. At the foot of Thanh Da Canal bridge, pieces of land under the canal bank collapsed, forming deep depressions.
Preliminary statistics show that about 15 households were directly affected, some of which had to be urgently evacuated to ensure safety. The sidewalk is bumpy and cracked, many sections have to have danger warning signs posted. Many people who continue to live along the embankment said they are always in a state of insecurity, especially when the annual high tide season coincides with the 8th and 9th lunar months. Weak ground combined with the makeshift embankment system makes the risk of insecurity always present. Previously, in 2023, facing the situation of the solid embankment in Thanh Da being eroded and seriously degraded, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City approved the policy of building a new embankment section 1.1 of Thanh Da canal, 478m long, to replace the damaged embankment. According to the decision, the clearance area is calculated from the edge of the embankment to the shore 10m. The project has a total investment of about 90 billion VND, including embankment items, drainage system and green space.
However, as of mid-2025, the project has yet to start. Local residents said they have contacted the survey team many times, and many press agencies have also recorded the actual situation, but so far there has been no concrete change. Warning signs were erected because the sidewalk was peeling and landslides could happen at any time. The houses were dilapidated and left behind when the family had to move due to landslides. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuoi, 78 years old, a resident living near the embankment, hopes to soon have a clear plan to stabilize her life, determine who will be relocated and who will be allowed to build stably.
Thanh Da area is one of the hot spots for riverside landslides in Ho Chi Minh City, and has been put on the priority list for handling. The fact that the solid embankment project has not been implemented has left the lives of dozens of households in an unstable state, especially when the rainy season and high tides are approaching. People here said that their biggest wish now is for the city to soon have a specific plan to completely resolve this situation, in order to ensure safety and long-term stability for life.
