US Vice President Kamala Harris is pushing for a second debate with former President Donald Trump, and is expected to unveil a series of new economic policies.
Reuters reported yesterday (September 23) that Democratic presidential candidate, US Vice President Kamala Harris, on September 22 called on Republican candidate Donald Trump to accept the proposal to debate on CNN on October 23 as a follow-up to the September 10 debate.

"He should accept because I really feel that we owe it to the American people and the voters to meet again before Election Day. We should have another debate. My opponent is looking for excuses to avoid it," Ms. Harris told supporters at a fundraiser in New York City.

Trump's reaction

In response, a representative of Mr. Trump's campaign mentioned the presidential candidate's statement at a rally in North Carolina on September 21 when asked about Ms. Harris's debate proposal. "The issue of another debate is too late. Voting has begun," Mr. Trump said at the rally. On September 21, voters in the three states of Minnesota, South Dakota and Virginia began voting early before the official election day (November 5). Ms. Harris admitted on September 22 that early voting had begun in some states but noted that the official election was still more than a month away. On the same day, NBC News announced the results of a survey of 1,000 voters conducted from September 13 to 17, showing Ms. Harris leading Mr. Trump by 5 percentage points, with support rates of 49% and 44%, respectively. In an interview published on September 22, Mr. Trump said he would not run for US president again if he lost to Ms. Harris in the upcoming election, according to Reuters.

Is Ms. Harris about to announce a new policy?

In addition to promoting the second debate with Mr. Trump, Ms. Harris is expected this week to announce a series of new economic policies aimed at helping Americans.   growing wealth and providing economic incentives to businesses to support that goal, Reuters reported, citing three sources familiar with the matter. The new policies could be announced in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 25, as undecided voters continue to demand more information on how Harris would help them economically if she is elected president in November. The announcement of a slew of new economic policies follows a heated debate within the Democratic Party about whether it is a smart strategy to announce more economic policies so close to the election. Some advisers have acknowledged that announcing new economic policies less than 50 days before the election could mean the measures will not reach key voters, Reuters reported. The sources did not provide details on the new economic policies expected to be announced soon. Harris campaign spokesman James Singer also declined to comment on the new economic policies. Mr. Singer said only that Ms. Harris “will continue to advance her economic opportunity agenda of lowering costs, making housing more affordable, and spurring economic growth across America.”

Ms. Harris raised a record amount of money.

ABC News quoted an aide to Vice President Harris's campaign as confirming that she raised $27 million at a fundraiser in New York City on September 22. This is a record amount of support Ms. Harris has received from an event since becoming a presidential candidate. The aide, who did not want to reveal her identity, said that although Ms. Harris already has more money than Mr. Trump, the newly raised money will be necessary to compete with expensive advertising programs of wealthy groups supporting Mr. Trump.
