In a recent social media post, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at the prestigious Harvard and Stanford Universities in the US, shared five types of drinks that can reduce the risk of cancer.
Green tea reduces the risk of cancer
Meta-analyses have found that regular consumption of green tea reduces the risk of several types of cancer, including breast, stomach, esophageal, colorectal, liver and prostate cancer, according to the Hindustan Times.
According to Dr. Sethi, it is the catechins in green tea that give this beverage its power. Regular consumption of green tea reduces the risk of breast and colorectal cancer by 20-30%.
The study also found that drinking one cup of tea a day reduced the risk of head and neck cancer by 9%, especially in the lower throat area.

Coffee
According to Dr. Sethi, with its high content of polyphenols and antioxidants, each cup of coffee a day reduces the risk of liver cancer by 15%. It also protects against endometrial cancer.
And 3-4 cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of head and neck cancer by 17%, especially oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer, according to recent research. In addition, drinking coffee regularly also helps reduce the risk of prostate, mouth, colon and skin cancer.
Coffee contains compounds with antioxidant properties that can reduce DNA damage, fight inflammation, and potentially promote the self-destruction of damaged cells. All of these may help reduce the risk of cancer.
Water
Drinking enough water helps dilute substances that cause urinary tract cancer. Drinking more water helps reduce the risk of bladder cancer, Dr. Sethi explains.
Studies show that women who drink five or more glasses of water a day may reduce their risk of colorectal cancer (one 240 ml glass). For men, drinking four glasses of water may reduce their risk. Another study also found that women who drink at least four glasses of water a day may reduce their risk of colorectal cancer.
Lemonade
Lemon juice is rich in vitamin C and flavonoids. Meanwhile, consuming citrus fruits reduces the risk of stomach and esophageal cancer by 10-15%, Dr. Sethi said. Research also shows that consuming lemon juice reduces the risk of lung cancer.
Ginger water
Finally, herbal teas such as chamomile, ginger, and peppermint are rich in polyphenols and anti-inflammatory compounds. Observational data suggest that herbal tea consumption may reduce the risk of stomach, colorectal, and colon cancers.
Ginger has been shown to be effective against various types of gastrointestinal cancers such as stomach, pancreatic, liver, colorectal, and biliary tract cancers.
In addition, Dr. Sethi said that pomegranate juice also has the effect of slowing the growth of cancer cells, especially prostate cancer. Berries help reduce the risk of esophageal and colorectal cancer, according to Hindustan Times.
