Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, Deputy Director of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, affirmed that the press and media play a particularly important role in natural disaster prevention and control.
On September 17, in Hue City, the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) coordinated with UNICEF to organize a workshop on "Training on child-centered communication in natural disaster situations".
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, Deputy Director of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, said that in 2025, natural disasters continued to develop complicatedly, the whole world witnessed many disasters causing heavy damage. From forest fires in the US, floods in China, earthquakes in Myanmar, to severe heat and forest fires in Europe... in the first half of the year alone, global economic losses exceeded 130 billion USD. Those figures sound the alarm about the increase in global climate risks and the importance of improving forecasting, warning, as well as communication for the community to respond promptly.
In Vietnam, since the beginning of the year, there have been many major natural disasters. Storm No. 1 in June caused unseasonal rain and widespread flooding in the Central region. Storm No. 3 in July caused historic flooding on the Ca River, isolating tens of thousands of households in Nghe An and Thanh Hoa. In particular, Storm No. 5 at the end of August reached level 14, gusting to level 17, causing heavy rain lasting from the North to the North Central region, forcing the evacuation of nearly 60,000 people, damaging tens of thousands of houses, and damaging hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops. Thanks to the drastic direction, participation of the forces and the initiative of the people, human losses have been minimized.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, in those difficulties, stories, examples of bravery and noble deeds have shone. In Dien Bien, when the flood suddenly came, Chief of Mua A Thi village did not fear the danger, immediately organized the evacuation, moving 21 households with 90 people to a safe place, just a few minutes before the landslides flooded the village. In addition, the images of police, soldiers and border guards carrying children through the flood, evacuating students from dangerous areas, further demonstrated the determination to protect the lives of children - the most vulnerable group in natural disasters.
"Those stories are clear evidence of the strength of the community, the value of spreading knowledge and skills in disaster prevention and control (PCTT) to every village, every family, every school. And that is also an important part of the communication and journalism tasks that specialized reporters are undertaking. Equipping safe working skills, while raising awareness and communication capacity with a "child-centered" lens, is extremely necessary and urgent," shared the Deputy Director of the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tien affirmed that the press and media play a particularly important role in disaster prevention and control. Through the press, people can access information quickly, accurately, and promptly, knowing when to evacuate, when to take shelter, and how to protect themselves and their families. During the recent storms, reporters and editors have accompanied the disaster prevention and control forces, closely following the scene, transmitting information to the community, helping to minimize the risk of damage.
This workshop not only equips reporters with knowledge and skills for safe work, but also emphasizes the social responsibility of the press: Every news report, every image, every quote must aim to protect children, raise public awareness, spread good examples, humane stories, thereby turning early warnings into early actions, minimizing damage to the whole society.
At the workshop, representatives of functional agencies presented papers such as: Overview of natural disaster situation in Vietnam and some key issues on PCTT when implementing the two-level government model; early warning in PCTT of hydrometeorological origin; the role of press agencies in propaganda work on PCTT; press with information and communication work on PCTT and orientations in the coming time...
