On September 24, Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital (Can Tho City) announced that it had successfully treated a 4-year-old girl named TTPN (living in Phu Loi Ward, Can Tho City) who suffered from intestinal obstruction due to swallowing hair.

Previously, baby N. was hospitalized in a state of exhaustion, poor appetite, abdominal pain and vomiting. After examination, doctors diagnosed the baby with intestinal obstruction.

During the endoscopy, doctors discovered a 12cm long section of intestine filled with hair and food debris, causing a serious blockage. After the surgery to remove the foreign object, N. was conscious but still needed to be closely monitored due to her exhausted condition.

According to doctors, the child showed signs of Rapunzel syndrome, a rare disorder that causes people to pull out and eat their own or other people's hair. Swallowed hair cannot be digested and gradually accumulates in the stomach or intestines, forming large clumps that cause blockages.

"This syndrome is related to psychological disorders," said a doctor at the hospital.

Doctors recommend that parents and caregivers pay special attention to unusual behaviors in children, such as sucking or swallowing non-food objects, or pulling hair and swallowing it. If these symptoms are detected, the child should be taken to a medical facility for timely examination and treatment.
