Turn summer vacation into an experiential “semester”

Apply learned knowledge and skills into practice

This is the third summer vacation that Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Ha, a 4th year student, Faculty of English, Lac Hong University (Tran Bien ward) has participated in the Green Summer Volunteer Campaign (MHX).

Ms. Ha said: As a student of the English Language Faculty, all three times she participated in the MHX Volunteer Campaign, she was arranged to be in charge of the Green Shirt Tutor class. In the MHX Volunteer Campaign in 2023 and 2024, she joined the province's Green Shirt Tutor team, in charge of teaching English for free to disadvantaged children living in Tan Phong ward (now Tan Trieu ward).

This year, in the MHX Volunteer Campaign organized by the Youth Union and the School Association in Tan An commune, Ms. Ha is in charge of the Green Shirt Tutor class at Tan An Kindergarten. The school has 2 campuses, of which campus 1 is about 7km away from campus 2. This road has a large number of trucks running continuously, which is quite dangerous. With the desire to bring opportunities to access English to all children in the 2 campuses, Ms. Ha and a number of volunteers 3 times a week after teaching at campus 1, go to teach at campus 2.

“It is quite difficult for preschool children to concentrate on studying. We consider this an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in practice, so we overcome this by dividing them into small groups, letting them study and play at the same time, helping them approach English in the most natural way,” said Ms. Ha.

For Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan, a third-year student at the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Dong Nai Branch of the University of Forestry, the MHX Volunteer Campaign is not only an opportunity to contribute, but also an opportunity to apply the knowledge he has learned to real life.

Mr. Nhan said: The MHX volunteer campaign organized by the Youth Union and Student Association of the Forestry University branch in Dong Nai in Bau Ham commune recently, he was able to participate in many meaningful activities. In particular, he personally, as a student of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, was very active in activities such as planting trees, cleaning the environment, propagating waste classification, environmental protection, etc. Through these activities, he contributed to propagating and raising people's awareness of the importance of protecting natural resources and the environment.

Try new and difficult things

For many students, participating in the Summer Youth Volunteer Campaign is also an opportunity to go to new lands and try new and difficult jobs.

To avoid a summer vacation that would be wasted, this year, instead of staying home to rest, Nguyen Binh Gia Nhu, a student of class 11A7 at Thong Nhat A High School (Trang Bom commune), registered to join the volunteer team to support the operation of the two-level local government in Trang Bom commune.

According to Gia Nhu, this is a rather new and strange job that she is participating in. But after being guided by the staff at Trang Bom Commune Public Administration Service Center, Gia Nhu visualized what needed to be done and quickly joined in. Notably, after only a few days, she was entrusted with the task of leading the volunteer team to support people to carry out administrative procedures at Trang Bom Commune Public Administration Service Center.

Gia Nhu said: After a month of volunteering to support at Trang Bom Commune Public Administration Service Center, I understand more about how state administrative agencies operate, how to carry out some simple administrative procedures to guide relatives and friends to do right at home. At the same time, I have more social relationships, other necessary life skills...

As a former student of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Lac Hong University, Mr. Le Trong Dai still spends time participating in the MHX Volunteer Campaign in Tan An commune. Mr. Dai said: This is the 4th time he has participated in the MHX Volunteer Campaign. During the 4 times he participated in the MHX Campaign, he was able to visit many places and do different youth projects and tasks.

Among them, the project that Mr. Dai remembers most is lighting up the countryside roads in Binh Hoa commune (now Tan Trieu ward) in 2023. As students who were only familiar with books, he and his friends cleared the land, cleared the grass and erected street lamps..., helping people travel more safely at night. Not only contributing with projects and tasks, each campaign season, he got to go, explore and learn more about the land and local people...

Mr. Dai believes that every young person should give themselves the opportunity to participate in volunteer activities to turn summer vacation into a "semester" to gain experience and grow more mature.
