Four mistakes that can easily lead to deduction of points in Literature subject of high school graduation exam

No conclusion, many spelling mistakes, forgetting to introduce the author, work all get heavily deducted points in the high school graduation exam in Literature.

On June 28, more than one million candidates will take the high school graduation exam, with the first subject being Literature. According to teachers, there are four mistakes that many candidates made in previous exams.

"Elephant head, mouse tail"

Mr. Do Duc Anh, a teacher at Bui Thi Xuan High School in Ho Chi Minh City, said that many candidates, after reading the questions, often "blow their heads" and write without dividing the time for each question in the questions, causing their essays to fall into a "head-to-tail" state. Specifically, some candidates write very carefully at the beginning, but near the end, they write carelessly and incompletely because time is up. This way of doing things can easily lead to losing points due to incomplete ideas, and can also result in heavy deductions if they forget or do not have time to write a conclusion.

"An essay without a conclusion will not only have points deducted for content but also for structure," said Mr. Duc Anh.

Another situation that can lead to this error is that many students write too long a draft and then copy it into the test, wasting time. Therefore, Mr. Duc Anh advises candidates to only draft the system of arguments and main ideas that need to be developed, and not to draft too detailed and complete a draft.

To avoid the mistake of writing "the elephant's head and the mouse's tail", according to Mr. Phan The Hoai, a teacher at Binh Hung Hoa High School, students need to allocate their time to do the test reasonably, for example, spend 10-15 minutes on reading comprehension, 20-25 minutes on social commentary, prioritize time for literary commentary, and the last 5-7 minutes to reread the test to correct spelling errors if any. Average and weak students should prepare the conclusions of some familiar works to write quickly.

Not reading the question carefully

Another mistake students often make is not reading and analyzing the question carefully, leading to digression or writing based on emotions. For example, the question requires writing a paragraph but the candidate writes a whole essay.

Many students forget the additional requirements of the question. In addition to analyzing the work, the literary essay question may also require a connection to real life or one's own thoughts and actions. Many candidates are so engrossed in analyzing the work that they forget or write carelessly, which can result in losing all or not getting full marks.

Therefore, Mr. Duc Anh noted that when reading the test, candidates should underline keywords and carefully analyze the given data as well as the requirements of the test.

Spelling errors, layout errors

"The marking instructions always give points for correct spelling and grammar. Therefore, candidates should not use unfamiliar words that are uncertain about meaning or spelling," said Mr. Duc Anh.

To get a high score on an essay, both in social and literary argumentation, Mr. Hoai noted that candidates must ensure both form and content.

For example, the social argumentative essay requires writing a paragraph, so it cannot be written on a line break, and it cannot be presented as a miniature essay. In the literary argumentative essay, candidates must clearly write the introduction, body, and conclusion. In the body, candidates need to divide it into many small paragraphs, each paragraph presents a clear argument, and avoid writing from top to bottom, which will be very confusing.

Forget the author's context and work

In the literary essay section, according to Mr. Duc Anh, some mistakes that can easily result in a deduction of points include not introducing the author, the context of the work or its meaning and contribution. For questions requiring analysis of a poem or excerpt from a story, candidates often forget to introduce the position and order of that excerpt in the work.

Mr. Hoai believes that when taking the test, candidates should focus on writing correctly and sufficiently, without trying to write well or differently because the creativity part only accounts for 0.5/5 points. Students with literary talent will have their own way of analyzing and feeling, the examiner will appreciate those perspectives and give them appropriate points.
