Lauren Sanchez recently shared a photo of her billionaire boyfriend on Instagram. In the photo, Jeff Bezos is working at a homemade desk from the early days of Amazon. According to Fox Business, he made a side door into a desk to save money after starting his business. Many people expressed surprise at Bezos and even praised his hard work.
Sanchez also reposted an old photo of Bezos working at this desk.
Sanchez’s post has been liked nearly 30,000 times in a day and counting. One person commented: “Lucky desk! Never throw away the things that bring you luck and never forget how it all started.” Another person exclaimed: “Consistency, perseverance and purpose.” “A reminder to keep striving for excellence, even when you’ve reached the top,” a third person commented.
Amazon wasn’t an immediate success. In fact, when Bezos started his online bookstore Amazon in 1994, he had to borrow money from his parents’ savings. So he had to be frugal. When some employees needed desks, he came up with a super-cheap solution: using a door as a desk top.
Today, Amazon is one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms and Bezos was once the richest man on the planet. He owns a lot of real estate, private planes and even started an aerospace company.
Still, the self-made billionaire reminds himself every day of the importance of saving. His desk at Amazon is an upgraded version of his original one. Nico Lovejoy, Amazon’s fifth employee, shared the story that year.
“We happened to be across the street from Home Depot. He was looking at the tables and doors they were selling, and the doors were much cheaper, so he decided to buy one and add four legs to make a table.”
In 1999, when Amazon went public and Bezos became a billionaire, with nearly $10 billion in company stock, Amazon was still using desks made from doors. That year, the founder told CBS’s “60 Minutes” that the office space and desks were meant to illustrate the value of the business: “Spending money on things that matter to customers and vice versa.”
Bezos even uses the desk to recognize employees who come up with cost-saving ideas, giving them a mini-desk with his signature and calling it the “Door Desk Award.”
Bezos’s first homemade desk was pretty shabby. “You should never hire Bezos as a carpenter,” Lovejoy quipped. “He’s much better at other things. I think he would say the same thing.”
