More than 10 days after the historic flood, My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (located in Xang Tren village, My Ly commune, Nghe An province) is still devastated.

Mr. Tran Sy Ha - Principal of My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities said that the school has 5 campuses with 202 students. 4 separate campuses scattered in the villages were not significantly affected. However, the main campus of the school with 168 students studying with 89 students living in boarding houses was completely damaged after the flood.

Before the flood, the school mobilized teachers to move furniture, assets, and books to the second floor of the school. However, the flood water was so strong that it swept away rocks and soil, even to the second floor of the school.

“The water has never flooded up to the second floor, so I thought it would be safe to put my things there. But this flood was so terrible, all the property inside was submerged and damaged. On the second floor, the mud was 1-2 meters thick,” Mr. Ha said sadly.

3-4m thick layer of mud outside the buildings and inside the classrooms.

All assets and teaching aids such as televisions, printers, computers, tables, chairs, books, blankets, beds, wardrobes... were swept away and damaged.

All that remained was rubble.

“All 12 televisions, 5 refrigerators, 5 printers, 22 computers for teaching. All the desks and chairs in 7 classrooms; 1.7 tons of rice reserved for boarding students. In addition, the students’ books, personal belongings, and even the boarding teachers’ blankets, beds, and wardrobes were all swept away and damaged by the flood,” said Mr. Tran Sy Ha.

From the gate to the school yard, the school's functional buildings are all submerged in mud and trees.

A large tree was swept away by floodwaters and stuck in the stairs of the second floor of the school.

Over the past few days, the authorities, soldiers, police, local authorities and people have come to help the school clean up and overcome the consequences. However, the amount of mud and soil is so large that it is expected to take a long time to bring the school back to its original state.

Many classrooms have collapsed and cracked, no longer ensuring teaching and learning.

"We earnestly call on donors, organizations and individuals to join hands to help My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities so that teachers and students can soon return to teaching and learning. Every share, whether it is a book, a set of tables and chairs, a warm blanket, a kilo of rice... is a great source of encouragement, a flame that rekindles faith and hope for the students here," Mr. Ha wrote in a letter of appeal.
