On August 19, RT quoted an official statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense saying that the explosive-laden UAV was intercepted before crashing into its target.

According to the announcement, the attack took place at 10am on August 19, Moscow time. Russia accused Ukraine of being behind the "terrorist attack" in the Novgorod region.

The Russian side also announced that the UAV was detected by air defense forces in the airport area and was immediately shot down. Falling debris from the UAV caused a fire in the base. The incident did not cause any casualties but damaged one aircraft.

On the same day, two other UAV attacks on Russian territory were thwarted. One was shot down in the Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine, while another attack was suppressed by electronic warfare forces in the Moscow region.

According to military officials, none of the UAV strikes caused casualties or damage on the ground.

Several drone attacks have been carried out on Russian territory in recent times, many of them in Moscow itself.

In May, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) announced it had thwarted a drone attack on a military airport near the city of Ivanovo in central Russia.

Last December, several UAVs targeted the Dyagilevo and Engels military airfields, located 500km and 700km from Ukrainian territory, respectively. Six people were killed on the ground and two aircraft suffered minor damage.
