Urgent warning: Countries should not travel at this time

Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent travel warning for Israel, Iran, India, Pakistan, Thailand... and many other countries due to increased geopolitical tensions, civil unrest, natural disasters and security risks.

The Street said the advisory from Global Affairs Canada specifically urges Canadians and global travellers to avoid or limit travel to Middle Eastern countries. This is because the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has exacerbated unrest across the region. The Canadian government advises all travellers to stay informed about local developments, especially with flight disruptions, border closures and emergency evacuations without warning.

While Qatar remains relatively stable, it is not immune to risks from regional tensions between Israel and Iran. Travelers in Qatar are advised to closely monitor local news and follow all instructions from the authorities, as the situation could escalate unexpectedly.

A recent survey found that many Canadian tourists feel unwelcome and unsafe in the United States – the top destination for Canadians – especially as large-scale protests and civil unrest in cities like Los Angeles have raised concerns about the potential for violence and public unrest.

Mexico’s safety risks have been exacerbated by Hurricane Erick, which made landfall on June 19, causing severe flooding, mudslides and disruptions to essential services. Travelers are advised to avoid non-essential travel to affected areas along the Pacific coast, particularly between Bahías de Huatulco and Acapulco. In addition, increased violence in areas such as Sinaloa has raised concerns about road travel safety.

Cuba continues to grapple with widespread shortages of food, water and medicine, disrupting daily life for both locals and tourists. Some resorts have had their services disrupted due to lack of resources.

Thailand remains a country of concern for tourists due to ongoing political unrest. Travellers are advised to be cautious in certain areas when visiting Thailand, particularly in areas near Myanmar and Cambodia where clashes and security threats may occur.

In India, tensions between India and Pakistan have increased risks near the border, with landmines and unexploded ordnance posing significant hazards. Travellers are advised to exercise caution when travelling there, especially in areas affected by insurgent activity.

Panama is facing ongoing unrest due to widespread protests and rising crime levels in provinces such as Bocas del Toro and Colon. Travelers are advised to check routes in advance and exercise caution in high-risk areas, especially after dark, near the VRAEM corridor and the Colombian border.

Germany is currently maintaining heightened security measures due to concerns over terrorism and illegal migration, with temporary border controls in place until at least September this year. In Costa Rica, theft and pickpocketing remain a common concern, especially in tourist areas.
